As an article said today, the key issue was sports. Voda having all the key content. Now, that's not an issue. Sky has all the key content, they paid the big bucks for it, and fair enough, Anyone can get Sky. BUT. The issue was that Voda could make Sports with Voda far cheaper than sports with Sky. AND, they could make certain sports a VodaSky exclusive.

As was stated today in the media, and I just got home, no link, if sports wasn't in the mix it would have gone ahead. I am happy to admit that I work for Spark, but I put bias aside. I also have Sky. If Sky was to be available to everyone with no competitive disadvantage, then there is no issue with the merger, it becomes merely a cost sharing exercise, which is efficient. The OZ version of ComCom can and does allow rules. Ours doesnt. Its a yes or its a no. And what I assume Voda and Sky put forward did not remove the possibility of abuse of the sports content. My opinion, not Sparks.

Vodafone already do Sport deals, like free for 6 months etc, Sky also do their own deals via telemarketing, (Which can be pretty compelling) The question is I guess would those stop if Vodafone bought them. The CEO of Sky said that wouldn't change, Any ISP would be able to get the same deal as Vodafone, As Telecom used to sell Sky..

How hard would it be for Spark to get rights to rugby. I wish instead of everyone complaining someone else would step up and try for it

Very very good points. IIRC The Telecom deal was a few bucks cheaper, and all on one bill.

What we don't know is what could happen. As I said, in Oz, they can put rules in to circumvent an unfair advantage. If that was here, and I worked for Soark, as I do, and I have Sky, which I do, I am protected. I couldn't care less if the Voda guy gets it a few bucks cheaper. But if I cant get Super 14 till 5 hours later, etc, thats becomes a bigger issue. Right now, everyone can get Sky and get access to a sport or their sport. Pay the money, or use FanPass. But if paying the money or using Fanpass still excluded non Voda customers, thats an issue IMHO.

Very easy, as Spark is a big company. As is Carters, as is Fletchers, as is Mediaworks and TVNZ. To be worth it, it has to pay. Take RWC. Sky must have paid HUGE money. That HUGE money wont add 200,000 subscribers. So IMO, as an ex financial guy, it was a loss. But its the brand. They suck it up, and any year when there is no big event on, they probably do well. For an individual company to take on one sport thats probably hard.

I'm not sure I see NF and LB as entirely complementary. For example they share some series e.g. Vikings, but LB has newer seasons.

Netflix is much easier to use than Lightbox across a variety of platforms

I am now starting to see Lightbox as a barrier to Netflix having some series available to NZ subscribers

So if I have to pick one: bye-bye Lightbox.

No monopoly. TVNZ OD, 3-Now, Amazon, Hulu coming, other stuff I can access free through my MiBox.

Neon has the HBO series that the others don't, Amazon has its own series also (although interestingly, Amazon in the US has some HBO series like Boardwalk Empire, Band of Brothers, The Pacific, True Blood all spring to mind but these aren't available with Amazon NZ). Then theres Quikflix, are they still around?

We don't particularly want to see a monopoly, but against such giants like Amazon and Netflix, and to a lesser extent Neon/Sky, I struggle to see a place for Lightbox

The other factor you have to take into account is that unlike say the EPL if you buy the rights to the Rugby in NZ you have to produce the content and all that entails, including having it in a quality that other broadcasters can use.

And also to take into account is that the sport body that has the rights doesn't always take the highest bid, other factors can also be taken into account. I would imagine one in NZ would be that a lot of 'BIG' rugby fans in NZ live rurally so getting it to them by OD might not go down that well.

Is it competition though? I can't sign up to either company X or Y to watch TV shows A and B.

I have to sign up to X to watch A and Y to watch B if I want to watch both. And price to sign up to both will be more than sign to one.

So you prefer a monopoly? If one provider had everything, it won't be $15 per month. Its like when Sky gets bashed, we want sport elsewhere, then EPL was released, yay. The n it was , I have to pay for Sky and EPL now. Can't really have it both ways. If you want to save money, forego something. If you want it all, there is a cost

No I want that if you want to watch EPL only you can get for $20 but if you want to watch EPL, Rugby , Cricket , Darts etc you can get it for $80, not $80 + $20.
