I've just cancelled my Spark Sport subscription.
Having NZ cricket free-to-air is nice, but what I really want - and the only reason I paid for Spark Sport - is F1.

I'm hoping that Sky will get the F1 rights, and that they continue the same wider coverage that Spark Sport brought (compared to the previous Sky coverage).
Otherwise I guess I'll have to buy an F1TV Pro subscription :(

afe66: Bugger.
That's annoying. I have little faith in tvnz or sky offering on on demand streaming sport service.

I'll be paying for f1pro most likely.

Does this mean commentary might return to radio?

The commentary has always been on the radio since the demise of Radio Sport, it's on the ROVA app, and was Magic Talk on an AM/FM frequency depending on where you live.

I often get cricket commentary when I tune in to Today FM for Lloyd Burr's show. It's annoying for a news junkie like me, but great for cricket fans no doubt.

Where are you located? Must be an AM signal near you if you got it previously?

Guess losing the EPL lost enough subscribers that they couldn't make profit anymore. I still have it for the European football and England cricket so keen to find out what's happening with them. Especially England cricket as the shut down is scheduled to happen during the Ashes. Actually during a test (1 July is day 4 of the 2nd test).

So is Spark sport actually being sold all up to TVNZ?

or are TVNZ just picking over its corpse for whatever rights they think they can wrap advertising around and make money off....

Looking to hear what's going to happen to the EUFA rights that Spark have though to 2024...

https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/128591178/spark-sport-to-show-2024-and-2028-european-football-championships

"Spark also holds the local rights to UEFA’s Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League until the end of 2023-24 season"

I don't think all of their rights are going to TVNZ - as pointed out above, Sky are getting Formula 1, but Spark's agreement for this was set to expire this year anyway.

The F1 isn't related at all. Spark's rights ended at the end of 2022, so Sky's are a new agreement

Yes, but the other sports are under discussions to find a new home, and likely Sky will be that home

I for one am really pleased with this announcement. I always thought that Spark should stick to their core business of telecommunications etc.

I subscribe to SKY Sport, and I used to get a little annoyed when I couldn't watch the Black Caps playing on home soil because of the need to subscribe to Spark Sport. My viewing dollars can only stretch so far, and I would not pay another subscription. I know that I could turn it on/off whenever I liked, but I flatly refused to add extra expense to my sports viewing. Cricket was the only sport that Spark had that interested me. Formula 1, NBA, NFL etc do not interest me at all. I do realize that many of you do like those sports, and I'm disappointed for you. You WILL be getting Formula 1 courtesy of SKY Sport from March 2023 starting with the Bahrain GP. SKY have stated that the Melbourne GP will be free-to-air, with other GP's also free-to-air through highlights packages. The other sports will hopefully appear on free-to-view TV or SKY Sport in the near future.
