HDCP is another one. In the early days I took a TV back (TV 2 years old) because couldn’t get picture on screen from external device.
Manager of large retailer spent two hours arguing with me that TV technologies change. I was telling him I wouldn’t brought TV if knew couldn’t plug anything in.
He got a blue ray player and said if he could get picture on TV, no money back. I said see how it goes. He spent ages and sure enough no matter what input he used, no picture came up so I got money back.
Haven’t seen any modern day problems but goggling, looks like HDCP standards change over time with latest HDCP 2.2 for 4K content.
At least with applications not working can get around with external device, but no way around if HDCP goes out of date. 2.2 looks like for 4K content, so hopefully it was out before all 4K TVs manufactured.
I guess TV manufactures put cheap chips in the TV’s resulting in the future of not enough power for smart stuff, or they just stop supporting TV. Though I’m sure my LG 2017 is still getting software updates.
Have an HD Apple TV plugged into that one. The Apple TV is older then TV and everything is still working on it.
My 7 year old Samsung had its last update in 2019 - 4 years ago, so only supported for just the 3 years required by consumer law??
Just goes to show that TV's carry on but the support doesn't.
Wonder how long Tesla cars' firmware will be supported for??

AFAIK consumer law doesn't stipulate a timeframe for software support on a TV.
Maybe something to do with the higher framerate compared to the normal tv streams, I got this response from TVNZ support when asking if they match sky and spark on framerate for sports streams.
"The live streams and replays in the TVNZ+ sports hub will be 1080p and 50fps.
Please note that TVNZ's simulcast channels operated at 720p. These are the streams of TVNZ 1, 2 and Duke.
There will be occasions where a particular sport is streaming live in the TVNZ+ sports hub as well as showing on TVNZ 1. In these instances, if stream quality matters to you, we advise that you watch through the TVNZ+ sports hub."
I'm watching it right now. There is a link on the tvnz+ home page that says live stream now The Ashes 2nd test. Clicking it take you to page where can click watch from start or watch live. Now the ugly part. It just works like a cloud dvr recording off of Duke
The source stream looks like
Its the ugly 720p res feed directly off Duke with Sparksport and Duke logos. Rather than VOD type content taken from a master feed
There is a stream delay vs ota of around 10 seconds
Agree, the feed on TVNZ+ wasn't great, and didn't look like 1080p and 50 FFS. The feed through MYHD HomeRun that comes from the UHF ariel looked a much better pic quality.
This was my concern when this was announced, we've become used to great image quality through SparkSport, and now recently through SkySportNow, so although this is free, it's a lesser product.
TVNZ state that the sports hub on TVNZ+ will arrive on July 1st (Saturday), and a previous post states that they have been in touch with TVNZ who said that the sports hub will deliver 1080p Full HD on the hub, and 720p on TV1 and Duke. So, hopefully we will get FHD when the hub is up and running.

An interesting article with some back story to the move back into sport's broadcasting by TVNZ

There are multiple video and audio streams in that playlist - highest video quality is 720p25

IANAL. It doesn't go into specifics on many things. I just wish that this tech wasn't getting built into devices like tvs and fridges because it builds in planned obsolesce and limits the usable life for many, and ends up with these devices being thrown out before they need to be. So much for many of them clamining to be clean and green. Manufactures however do it because it allows them to sell new devices to a form of schedule. Especially when software may have a specific support period, where your device will no longer be secure after that period. Windows 10 PCs that don't qualify for windows 11 due to hardware requirements.

I hope it just works. Start watching live after the start, from then or from the start. Full replays not highlights
Every new sport streaming starts with problems, hope not this time

It seems very unlikely to me that someone would throw out a TV because some or all of the smart functions no longer work - although I guess there are some with more money than brains.
To me, the smarts in a smart TV are a nice add-on that I use when they are available. Currently I have a 3-year old Panasonic OLED and all the smarts work; I have set it up so I have different netflix regions available on the TV and the Apple TV connected to it. It used to have a Plex client but that was deprecated so I now run Plex on the Apple TV. If/when the smarts stop working it will still be an excellent TV and I will just use the Apple TV for the apps etc instead.

Really? I just think people are incredibly lazy, and if they had to pick up a 2nd remote that might be enough for some to consider it.
