Yabanize:

Background play is the best. It's so great to just be watching a video on your phone, switching to another app and still being able to listen.

It sucks that that is only on the pro version. I uninstalled the app after the trail, as it is just a battery drain if the screen has to stay on, Google obviously aren't into saving electricity with this app. Also it is nowhere near as good as a music app, as Apple music, pandora, or spotify.

So signed up for the free trial...given that it was free!

My ad blocker meant that I never saw any ads anyway and the "exclusive content" is uniformly dismal.

I won't be renewing!

Any of the $10.99ers had any luck with support?

I emailed on the 19th May, got a reply 5 days later saying Youtube can't help and forwarded me to Google Play Music. I completely forgot about it until the 8th June when they finally replied but Google Play Music ended up cancelling my subscription without my agreement and forwarding me to Youtube to help me sign up to the promo. Youtube said to late for the promo you'll have to pay 12.99 now but we can refund the first month to compensate?

One of the worst outcomes I've seen in my life!

Tried the chat now who said they will forward to a specialist, I hope they at least put my old rate back but I have no hope any more.

Wow, that is pretty shocking service. The last reply I had from a "specialist" on June 2 was that it had been elevated to an engineering team for correction and that once it had been fixed they would contact me, since then I've heard nothing. I have emailed again for an update, we'll see what happens. They seem to have painfully slow support, painfully slow. At least they haven't cancelled my current subscription.

My account is still being charged at $10.99. So much for the announcement on their blog stating:

If you're already a Play Music subscriber, don't worry, you'll also get this new low price, and you don't need to sign up again to benefit from YouTube Red.

It would seem they forgot to add fine print excluding some existing subscribers.

Just received:

Same service, lower price
Google Play Music

We have some great news. Starting today, we’ll be lowering your monthly subscription price from $10.99 to $9.99. You will see this new price reflected in your next Google Play receipt.

Thanks for being a Google Play Music subscriber

Excellent news, thanks Google!

Hopefully those having issues when going through the support desk get sorted out also.

Well interesting I got this email too, but a couple of days earlier I heard back from Google saying that I would not be charged $9.99, because that was only for YouTube red subscribers. What!? Haha, so I have no idea what I'll be charged next. I have to say Google's support had been both very very slow and confused. Pretty awful. I do like Google play music though.

I think this email is unrelated to your query, but could be wrong, just that I have also received this email yet I hadn't raised anything with Google support.

I think you're right. It seems to different parts of the business came up with 2 different answers.

Now I regret ever contacting support if it was going to reduce automatically!

After demanding an explanation as to why no one with the introductory GPM offer received the new price as promised they forwarded me to an 'Advanced Support Technician with Google Play'. His last reply a couple of days ago was 'I've gone ahead and requested that the price of your Play Music subscription be corrected to 9.99 NZD. As soon as this is complete, I'll be sure to let you know. At that time you'll be able to resubscribe that the correct price.' I hope they keep their promise but with 28 emails in my support thread so far it seems like no one has any power except a refund.

I got the automated email today saying I would have a price reduction to $9.99. My last reply 4 days ago from support was this confused mess:

"I appreciate the time spent in doing this follow up. I've consulted our specialist, its confirmed that you are charged the right charge of 10.00 NZD for Google Play Music. Your account is been charged the same charge since a long time. The charge 9.99 NZD which you are referring to was for YouTube subscribers.

I'm sorry to inform you that you wouldn't be able to avail this benefit. Hope this information is helpful for you."

So they had my current subscription wrong, and clearly nobody from support read the blog post which I linked to for them. So they basically said no we can't do it, and then 3 days later they say they are changing it! I guess I'll check next time my sub rolls over and see what happens. My first email to them was on May 24th, their last email was June 25th. So a month to give me a final result, which it turns out was wrong anyway. How could that have been so hard!?

Anyway, Google play music is all good, I've used that local syncing on youtube a couple of times, but haven't really explored the other features of youtube red.

The "Google Play Music family plan" is now available here in NZ. It's priced at $19.99/mth for up to 6 accounts (the same as Spotify's family plan.)
