For those who haven't noticed, if you have a current Google Play Music subscription, then logging into YouTube with that Google account will now enable YouTube Red - basically YouTube but without ads and with a small amount of additional content.

Not major, but it's good to see it roll out here (and Australia apparently). Now for Android Pay.... :)

Basically - I normally don't see ads when viewing on a PC, so have been surprised by them a couple of times when using YouTube on a device ipad/phone etc.

Just pleased to see that they are rolling some services out to our region (Canada don't yet have YouTube Red for instance), and with AndroidPay about to be launched in the UK it's good to see that NZ isn't entirely off Google's radar.

Just my luck that my google play music is on a totally different google account to what I use youtube on. Guess I will have to deal with cancelling the play music and re-subbing on a different account.

Great. I've been waiting for this to launch here before trying Play Music, and this launched just in time for me to cancel my Spotify subscription. smile

I'm surprised they have no original video content for launch.

gzt: I'm surprised they have no original video content for launch.

It was launched quite a while ago in the US. The original content seems to be mostly extra stuff from established youtubers (exclusive content from PrankvsPrank and PewDiePie amongst others). Not really my area of interest, but it's not aimed at putting standard movies on youtube as they have google play for that.

The major pluses seem to be no ads, a background youtube music app and the ability to download youtube vids and watch them later.

EDIT: And of course Google Play Music - subscribing to YouTube Red includes GPM subscription and vice versa.

Instead this time you are actually paying for the content and the servers to keep it running.

Finally.. I have yet to use the NZ one, but I do use Youtube Music via VPN daily.

My Google Music subscription comes with:

  • Google Music All Access
  • Youtube Red (no ads)
  • Youtube Music ( I find better than Google Music as it knows me better, and plays what I like, plus I can play HD music videos offline)

I normally use Youtube Music as a HD music channel via Chromecast. Basically runs for hours and hours by itself. And everything is in HD on my TV! I don't think SKY TV have an HD music channel?

All I need now is the Google Family plan that they have released in the states. That way I wont need to add my account to my wifes phone, just so she can have access to streaming music!

Cheers

using adblocker doesn't stop the content owners getting paid any more than going to the toilet during the ad-break on TV stops FTA channels on TV from generating money.

I have just cancelled my US Google Music subscription at US$7.99 (currently at about NZD$12).

And resigned to the special NZ deal of NZD$9.99. New prices start from next bill...

That's a good point - for some reason I'm currently paying NZD$10.99 a month for GPM (the introductory price I think). If I cancel that and sign up for YouTube Red instead, that's a slight saving anyway. For those who are currently paying $12.99/month it's even better. Is there any info on whether they will maintain the $9.99 price in perpetuity?

You got me excited for a moment, but the answer is no. Family Plan countries are:

  • Australia
  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • France
  • Germany
  • Japan
  • United Kingdom
  • United States
