What makes classical music different from Reggae, Country or even Scandinavian Black Metal?

Apart from old fashioned middle class ideas of "high culture" etc.

There is a reason why it's called 'classical'. Having a station dedicated to it is hardly elitist. What better way to make it available to the masses? Every other country in the western world does this. Except Nu Ziland, apparently.

Whether or not a car radio has an Aux input for use with a phone or supports Android Auto or Carplay is irrelevant in my opinion. There are plenty of places where I drive were mobile coverage is patchy at best yet FM coverage is quite adequate. Not everyone does all their driving in town or along SH 1.

That's what podcasts and downloaded playlists are for!

Just as equally you can say that's what radio is for.

But your post seems to suggest that the taxpayer should be providing a publicly funded service to suit your convenience and musical tastes.

Can I have one as well?

Again, what makes classical more worthy than any other type of music?

It is totally elitist to pay for something that appeals only to a limited number of primarily older, whiter, richer people.

And why should 96%+ of taxpayers fund something they don't use and have no interest in?

Everyone's keen on "user pays" until its something they use.

The UK has the commercial Classic FM. If it was viable nothing to stop someone doing the same here.

If we take in to consideration the merger with TVNZ. This could be a first step in having a commercial RNZ radio channel. There would not be the moaning from the masses if commercials interrupted the youth station. The cacophony from the classical music aficionados would be deafening if RNZ tried to interrupt the musical flow on Concert - even it was Concert AM.

Spotify lets you download things for when there is no data. I have my daily mix 1 thru 6 all ticked to download, as well as my and a few others discover weeklys. When I look on the phone, they are all there downloaded. With vodafone music pass, all that downloading is not counting to my data cap on mobile, so no problems there either. Download heaps of stuff and I may or may not listen to it.

Moving the concert channel to AM is absurd. It is totally unsuitable for broadcasting high quality music. If the board of RNZ had the courage of their convictions that RNZC is a minority listening taste that a publically funded organisation cannot support then they should say so and move the station to a streaming only platform to save the money and free the FM frequencies or just close it. Death by a thousand cuts is simply dishonest.

However, the politicians in the Beehive should reflect that the “white, older, well-off” listeners some commenters think are the only listeners are the ones paying most of the tax that is paying for this station and are active voters. If the Concert programme is considered ‘elitist’ then one must query funding for any western cultural art, e.g. ballet, NZSO, non-NZ art in museums etc.

All forms of art are "cultural" and of equal value to each other.

Why should some forms such as symphony orchestra or ballet receive funding when others do not?

Seems pretty elitist to define "western cultural art" as per your examples. Gangster Rap is just as much "western", "cultural" and "art".

Do you extend this to sport? How much funding goes to Team New Zealand for the Americas Cup and that is a minority sport for the rich elite.

I think some posters are missing the point. It's not about being elitist or whether or not RNZ Concert should be broadcast when other forms of "culture"are not broadcast in the same manner, It's about the method/rationale for the changes RNZ are proposing for RNZ Concert which are being questioned. The logic behind the proposal is seriously flawed, just as it would be it it were another form of culture/genre being given the same treatment as RNZ Concert.

Agreed.

However those allocating the funds would argue that the NZ economy stands to benefit from tourist numbers / marketing of NZ... plus the biggest TV audience for the AC is the US of A, which is obviously a massive trading partner for our country.

Non-commercial Classical music radio stations do not, however, have much in the way of financial benefits for the New Zealand economy.

For the record, I believe if one of the State Broadcaster's stations needs to be bumped down to AM, then the one that has the fewest listeners should be it.

It is indeed a backward move, in some ways. But as I read it, the programme material will be streamed music, and this is something that I have wanted for years. Get rid of the patronising concert DJs with their affected voices, and get rid of the pretentious stuff like broadcasting applause! I agree that AM would be a better place for National Radio....but has anyone seen the detailed results of listener surveys? Is the Concert audience really over say 60?
