I think Spark Sport is a considerably better option than Sky's streaming alternative SkySportNow. Image quality is better, UI is better, replays up quicker etc etc.
Sky's set-top Box is where they are putting most of their energy, not into streaming.

Revenue.
If you don't have that you do not have a service.
The other side of the coin - this story explains how Sky now basically has a monopoly again.

No, its not and it never was. Everyone is free to buy rights to anything. Is Netflix a monopoly?
Don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger 😀 that was the point I took away from that article.

Sky will again have a very dominant position, a virtual monopoly when it comes to Sport access. Yes there is a smattering of access on Free to Air and other obscure sources. Netflix is irrelevant as they do not deliver sport that is like comparing Harvey Norman to the grocery duopoly.
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

IMO its a free market. Netflix is a good comparison as the vast majority of their content is only on Netflix. So for every one of those contents, its a monopoly according to some. Sport or non sport, any content that is one one place is a monopoly. hence why I feel that word is quite erroneous
ALTRON: Pretty disappointed. Spark sport was way better than sky’s offerings.
Does that mean I have endure tvnz produced sport’s content? Argh it’ll be like heading back to the 80s, 90s gross
Kind of a google thing to do, just cancel a service like it’s cool.
What will become of MotoGP coverage??
MotoGP. The media says Spark are seeking buyers for the non sorted content, probably go to Sky.
I feel that TVNZ wants NZ sport, so if its FTA then yes, ads galore.
Im a bit oblivious to Sky or Spark Sport. I could watch both live, or both non live. Clicking a stream replay is no different than clicking the recorded content. Quality the same. Forwarding through ads or a break is easier on Sky. End of the day, content matters, less than the tin it comes from.
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
It’s a testament to just how much control they have. The fact that they can maintain their position of control whilst offering an inferior product.

I am one happy chappy. I miss my cricket.
Lived in Aussie for 30 yrs and when Fox (Sky) starting buying all the OB rights the Fed Gov passed legislation stating that most if not all premier finals series and events of national significance was to be FTA.
Yes I know with this new TVNZ deal we are going to have to put up with Ad's, they have to pay for the lights somehow, I wont mind so long as the shows producers do it sensibility. There are always time periods; 1,2 or 3 minutes, where a sport has a dead air spot, so instead of listening to inane commentary, they slot in an Ad.
Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

If they improved the video quality of Sky Sport Now, that would sort out the inferior product issue?
MikeB4: @tdgeek "a free market" not really it is heavily centrally controlled by very tight and expensive licence deal process that is not designed to encourage competition.
Here in Aotearoa probably 90% of sport coverage is controlled in some way by Sky. There is a small amount of motorsport on Three, some delayed coverage on Prime (Sky) and a very small amount on TVNZ.
The Spark example demonstrates how difficult a job any new comer has and the control exerted Sky TV is greater than control impact of the grocery duopoly.
Sky TV uses very monopolistic behavior and the rights owners are very complicent in that monopolistic behavior.
If our market was not an effictive monopoly Sky would and could not attain and maintain their very dominant position.
I assume that if sport was regulated, so that a few other players could take part that would solve the problem? Sky, and 3 or 4 others could have an even spread of sport.
