No-one is relying on the screen on the front of their fridge to keep their fridge contents cold.  Sure, if using the display was the one and only way to set critical settings for the fridge's operation, ok, but these appliances still work even if the smart features leave support or break for whatever reason.  Just like TV's still work if their locally installed Netflix app is deprecated. These are addons to core functionality.

It seems very unlikely to me that someone would throw out a TV because some or all of the smart functions no longer work - although I guess there are some with more money than brains.

Really?  I just think people are incredibly lazy, and if they had to pick up a 2nd remote that might be enough for some to consider it.

The great thing is that with most of the external streaming devices, you still only need one remote.

The Firestick I recently setup does all functionality except for selecting a terrestrial TV channel. (Though someone may be able to help me with this?)

There are heaps of people that would just grumble under their breath and go out and buy a new TV.

TV's are relatively cheap these days.

It's exactly what the manufacturers have always dreamed of - The TV is not actually broken - but 'needs' to be replaced.

My Auntie brought a smart TV for the Applications. She is not tech savvy.

Setting up another device on TV would be a learning curve for her, different city to me.

She only uses Netflix at moment though. TVNZ is all watched live or recorded on MySky.

If a few years down track something stopped working that was using a lot of, probably easier for her to buy new TV.

When people think things are broken because the TV is on the wrong HDMI input because the grandkids came over with their playstation nintendo box and connected it, yes, the idea of connecting something to it is far too much.

Seems entirely reasonable from TVNZ

And on the other end of the scale, I think it's completely unreasonable. TVs have historically worked for decades: even black and white TVs continued to work all the way into the colour era, until analogue was finally turned off. In this case the broadcaster is knowingly breaking things after less than ten years, and my opinion is that we absolutely should not be normalising or accepting this sort of thing.

Note: I do not own one of the affected TVs and do not watch TVNZ.

Totally agree. I have two Samsungs, one which I consider quite new that falls into that category and also can’t receive the Three Now App any more. Pity because till now was happy with Samsung but will not be buying a Samsung again.

Didn't TVNZ make a change that stopped the service?  It all depends how long any TV manufacturer will keep updating it?

There's is always going to be two camps to these arguments.

Camp 1: I bought a TV and don't want to use any 3rd party boxes to provide a source. Therefore my TV should support all current streaming services for eternity and also support all future streaming services that haven't yet been launched.

Camp 2: I just want a TV to display the picture I send it from the streaming box of my choosing.

I'm afraid those in Camp 1 will always be disappointed. Built in streaming apps on TVs have a limited life span.

I'm amazed at how many people see the smart features as part of the core functionality of a TV. I've never viewed a TV as anything more than a display panel. Always use a dedicated media player for source input and always use a dedicated audio system or sound bar for sound output. There are always compromises to be made when you try to make one box do everything.

The OP's experience is a prime example. The difference in user experience between the built in TV apps and a dedicated streaming stick is night and day. And this is a device that retails for $59 and can often be bought cheaper on sale.

I have been following this thread with much amusement. I don't pirate but every time I encountered something with copy protection I would make a point of bypassing it, just for the satisfaction of doing so. I have always used external boxes for streaming. I also use a Harmony to control all my devices through a single remote. I can't see any point to a 'smart' TV. I did buy one several years ago, but that was because it was the best panel for the price. It was a couple of years before I even looked at the smart functions, just out of curiosity. They were as useless as I expected.

Same sort of thing here; it was effectively impossible to avoid the "smarts" in 2022 so I bought the TV without the expectation of ever using them. At one point I plugged in the Ethernet cable and tried the Freeview streaming, but was quickly turned off by the bitrate-starved streams being worse quality than an amateur YouTube video.

Amatures on youtube far exceed anything produced by the legacy media. They even mess up their youtube uploads putting a 1080p50 (ick, 50) file up that looks like its from a early 2000s handycam and no one bothered to deinterlace it. Don't forget to not bother with captions and turn off comments because you don't want to have any interaction.

I just discovered that no TVNZ streams at all are working on any of my devices. Is this what it is supposed to do now? Fortunately I have satellite as a backup, but don't know why I would bother.
