panther2: Ireland vs scotland looks great probably due to such low viewer numbers

The issues were not a capacity one.

this was made very clear in the PR release from spark sport themselves.

Really? That’s not the way I read it. They said they were making config changes to the way the stream was delivered to NZ. They never once said it wasn’t a capacity issue. It may not have been a capacity issue at spark but there must have been distribution capacity issues in delivery as all other streams prior to the most viewed one were perfect.

I can understand that, but AFAIK the feed goes from Japan to iStreamplanet USA West Coast to Akamai? I dint think Spark gets the feed and distributes it?

I think I read somewhere this stream comes from Japan to New Zealand where the local content is inserted and then goes to the US for encoding and then streaming back to us in New Zealand which explains why there is such a long delay in the actual picture vs over-the-air.

No

Mb2007: Is it any shock it dident works as it should have. Spark are in a servise they are in exsperance in. No shock here.

For the record I watched the first 2 Saturday games on spark app via a firestick on broadband speed around 10,mbps. Only once buffering for 3s or so.

I went out to watch the nz game on sky. I dedent trust spark. The way they have handled the primer league coverage was an early sing. Many problems not give gd explanation to the problems and blaming the feed from London when that was questionnbil. They will get it right I'm sure but nit for a wile yet

Can you work on spelling

That’s not rude at all is it? It can be difficult to type on a phone sometimes so I expect errors in posts... have you got anything useful to contribute?

One thing is bugging me... If it was a problem with the "international streaming partners" why did it not affect everyone?

Affected me in Wellington on 2degrees fibre - Samsung TV.
Affected my parents in Auckland on Vodafone fibre - Sony TV.

Stream was solid but quality was utter rubbish - at some points, I couldnt make out the players.

Thats odd as two here, Wellington and Porirua said it was unaffected

MileHighKiwi: Streaming is such a variable experience that Spark cant win. I polled some mates and had comments from perfect to piss poor. All on fiber, mix of devices. I think this is Sparks first and last world cup.

Sparks or anyones streaming WC? We all get told here that linear, broadcast and satellite are so yesteryear. So what now?

Is anyone noticing compression artifacts around the logos? Using 2009 Samsung Q60r. I'm pretty sure its at 60fps but i'm not sure if its actually at 1080p or the artifacting is just intrinsic to the actual stream itself. Its bothering me much more than it should. On adsl using wifi (but modem is like 2 meters away in the same room) so i'm just not sure

If only they allowed you to check the stream details on smart tv's...

Good of them to offer refunds. They are going to lose so much money on this RWC. From stream numbers last night they are well short of breaking even.

Can you provide the metrics please.

No-one has forgotten about the poor quality of Sky broadcasts.  But there was little alternative option at that time.  One would have hoped a new service on new infrastructure would take the lessons learnt by previous providers and resolve them, not introduce more problems of a similar ilk - i.e. substandard picture quality.

There were HEAPS of alternatives at that time. Google Monopoly. But no one had the balls to complete. So Sky was left to have an easy time.

I'm trying to find somewhere on Spark to congratulate them, but it seems like you can only complain.

Perhaps you should make a complaint about that 😂

Wasn't affected by the reported issues last night as I watched that game at the pub.  The games I have watched via streaming have all been flawless for me.  Been very impressed overall.

Actually most people think highly about the quality of Sky's broadcast.  As this chap Ben Goodale notes:

"But as a sports fan, I know the picture on Spark Sport is not as good as it would be on Sky."

Goodale says the point of technology is really to move things forward and improve the experience, but Spark simply hasn't done that in this instance.

"You have to ask whether Spark really needs to be in this space when there have been operations like Sky doing it for a long time and do it really well."

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=12269788

This sounds crazy but I wonder it's worth Spark actually reaching out and getting Sky involved to help solve this problem.  They're the experts here after all.  I streamed the Cricket World Cup via Sky without a hitch.

OMFG

1. SS is better than Sky. I LIKE sky, but F1 is better on Spark Sport as the latter is 1080p at 60fps not 10180i. But Sky is VERY nice on my top end plasma.

2. Maybe its time to ban streaming and introduce linear broadcast TV

3. Spark didn't reach out to Sky. Spark/Sky is business only, and was an option to make it easier to use than setup, but there is the cost.

Get the facts right first IMHO

But if the Spark picture was consistently working as it should (and can), it is better quality than Sky's broadcast because it's progressive instead of interlaced.  That guy you've quoted is incorrect. Not surprising NZ Herald is publishing inaccuracies though, just to stoke the fires.

And Sky give you warning about rain fade, sun spots, snow on your dish. So you at least have the heads up. The future IMO is streaming it just wasn't Sparks time.

Broadcast is easy, streaming isnt. If t was me here are the 4 devices we support, end of story. Not getting into browser and Tv issues.

Streaming well today. But they need to have a singular daily stream option, so I don’t need to load up the next match once one has finished haha.

One thing I am seeing is that sometimes during the ads and studio coverage the video freezes for a second or two, the audio continues unaffected however.

I also note it seems they have sorted the audio sync issue they were having when the augmented reality graphics are on screen.
