No, if you are casting something FROM your tablet or laptop then you need it awake. Only when using a third party app with stream coming from outside your network you can place the device in sleep.

Thanks Mauricio, I thought as much. I've done a little more reading and apparently some websites are set up for Chromecast and will send directly to the Chromecast, but I'm guessing that doesn't include the NZ on-demand services.

Once the token is passed you can actually turn your tablet/phone device off. Also multiple devices can access and que content to the Chromecast dongle or different dongles on your network.

It seems Chromecast dongles have been sold here before (at least thru NL and Warehouse Stationary). Earlier model looked idendical, but had different packaging and did not include the power pack. Was priced around $80 and there is still stock in some stores, so avoid these if you're in the narket.

So I see there is a Chrome extension for the chrome browser.

What I was wondering was, if I have the chrome browser running on my PC and I am accessing BBC iplayer, 4od or ITV and its playing back nicely...
Can I cast this to a Chromecast and does the audio/video play ok.

Would really love to know.
If anyone is using a geo unblocker on their network, and has a Chromecast device on their TV I would really appreciate them having a play and letting me know.

I've had 2x Chromecasts running in the house for around 3mo now - Netflix, Hulu and other streaming sites (including Mediabrowser for local content) have replaced Sky for us. They're excellent devices and my partner also really loves how she can stream "anything" to it either from her phone or from any of the computers.

How I've done the whole Geo Unblock on my network is route all port 53 DNS traffic via my Mikrotik with a firewall rule - so even if a device uses Google DNS it'll still go through dns4me's DNS servers, works like a champ and as far as the Chromecasts are concerned they're in the US but can stream all content no problems.

I've used the sky stream before from a chrome tab, wasn't any worse than the sky stream itself, but not awesome.

Absolutely no problems :) I use BBC iPlayer and 4OD all the time along with US Netflix / Hulu using the apps. I've noticed that quite a few sites now "see" the Chromecasts and allow you to stream to it and from here your computer can freely sleep as the Chromecast will keep playing it (it doesn't stream "from" Chrome mirroring):

Routing DNS traffic is the thing you really need to do if you're planning on using the native apps, doing this via a Mikrotik is a one rule, 10sec job.

I have a Fire TV - and while BBC iplayer is supported and works ok - there is no 4od or ITV player apps.
Also - the web browser interface on the PC allows access to more content anyway.
Looks like I might need to go shopping (Merry Xmas to me!)
Looks like the TP-Link router I have *should* support DNS routing - fingers X'd

PB Tech have been selling Chromecast for a while now....I got one a few months ago. Slightly hindered by not actually having a TV. ;-)

Did the ones you bought on Amazon come with NZ power plugs? The NZ version currently being sold in shops come with a NZ power plug.
