Do you really consider it boasting? Anyone can do it and the cost is negligible. Not much to boast about.

I am quite prepared to pay gst on the products/services I source from overseas.

I see there are threats of being hit with a 25,000 fine for activity avoiding/not paying this.

So is there going to be a mechanism by which I can pay the gst or is it going to be a case of you can _only_ buy services from these big name brands who IRD have made arrangements with....

(otherwise use a smaller company and risk a 25,000 fine (although realistically it wont be that big)

What a crappy text. They managed to not mention Netflix by name even when quoting someone and when talking about Spark.

Journalism at worst.

Which article are you talking about?

The stuff one mentions Netflix in the very first paragraph and even has a Netflix image at the time of the page with a caption about Netflix.

And then the spark section says

"....campaigned for the change. Chief executive Simon Moutter has said it is unfair it has to charge GST on its subscription television service Lightbox, while overseas rivals such as Netflix did not."

The Stuff article has been updated since it was first posted. I don't recall seeing Netflix mentioned by name when I first read it, and it certainly didn't have a line about its "no comment".

I read it immediately after posted here. The highlithed bits below were missing:

"[Netflix'] Sydney-based spokesman Luke McClelland would not comment on whether the United States television company might absorb all or any of the 15 per cent charge"

"Spark is one of the companies that has campaigned for the change. Chief executive Simon Moutter has said it is unfair it has to charge GST on its subscription television service Lightbox, while overseas rivals such as [Netflix] did not."

These were added after.

I can't possibly imagine a VPN provider in business for too long if people ended getting up being identified regardless of legitimate purpose or for avoiding geo blocking or for completely different reasons

Sigh.... it isn't about "avoiding copyright" or piracy. It's about parallel importing product that you have paid a legitimate reseller for, and bypassing pathetic NZ offerings with their high prices and limited range. No different to buying a book or a DVD off Amazon. Nothing is getting stolen. You are still paying for the product.

Perhaps the VPN/Geo unblocking providers will be the first to cease selling services in NZ?

I wonder whether Amazon uk will be removing the VAT and then adding GST, or just adding GST on top...

Wont change my buying practices in the slightest though...
