Or alternatively perhaps we should be pushing for the establishment of a Department of Men's Affairs and a Ministry for White People to ensure the most marginalised groups within this country are better acknowledged and supported?

Its not the spectrum that they need, its the money to run it....

The spectrum for the youth radio network has been sitting there "reserved" by the government for years ( they lent it out the Kiwi FM for a few years in the late 2000s when they had a go at a NZ Music station)

But to RNZ the spectrum is available at no cost, its the millions you need to operate a network of transmitters up and down the country,+ arranging staff and studio space so you can "add value" to the music....

The problem I have is that the window for youth radio probably closed 10 years ago, streaming what you want is where the game is now, not linear selected programming,

Also the govt throws around 800K a year at the 5 student radio stations that pretty much cover exactly the genre and age group this new station would appear to be aimed at, it would be far easier and cheaper to give more funding to expand student radio, then attempting to reinvent the wheel...

They are a lot more than 'minuscule'. I greatly enjoy classical music, though I am not fanatic about it. But it was not part of my upbringing and I might never have discovered it if not for subsidised public broadcasting radio stations. I find much classical music delightful and uplifting and I am grateful it is part of my experience and I am glad it was found important enough to be made available to me.

Speaking as one myself, the absolute last demographic that need a leg up is the white male. 😏

Hi, so it seems the Guvment has reacted to this as have many other supporters of CFM, and it looks as though there will be some light at the end of the tunnel, and most importantly some security about CFMs future, and in particular the staff that feed and narrate the program day by day, lets hope this keeps heading in the right direction before it goes pear shaped.

As for the board and CEO of RadioNZ, in my view to have intentionally gone down this route even though Minister Faafoi asked for time to "look into options" indicates that this guy Paul Thompson, needs to go, he has not provided the confidence that he has the interest of the network at stake, and probably some of the board, just thinking aloud here. But really can this guy keep his postion, when he is meant to protect and provision the interests of his listeners, clearly he has missed the mark.

As for the posters here who have indicated that CFM has no place, or should not gain any priority of public funds or support as its an eliest sector that probably can support themselves. Well to some extent this is true, however we must reflect on where the core of western music fundamentals, techniques and knowledge come from, they are rooted in Classic and Baroque periods of music developement, to honour these are essential, to forget or ignore them is a serious blow to our cluture, an akin to our neglect of our native culture, which gladly is gaining new recogintion, acknowlegement, and now flurishing.

I have to admit, that I am biased, I was brought up from very young with daily engagement in musical production, playing instruments of all manner, singing in choirs, performing in orcherstras, and later during my technical career which included 10yrs for the old BCNZ recording artists for RNZ, and laterly singing in choirs both here and in the UK.

For those of you who have never participated in an orchestra or choir, for me. there is no emotive experience that can compare, the surround of beautifully contrived music, voices and instruments at a level only direct interaction has provided is an experience that will never leave me. I am sure any muso in a band or whatever will attest to that.

The knowledge of "Classical" music is what drives modern pop or alt music, to disregard or give no place for the Classic is to me, not an option.

Glad they're not going to go ahead with this as originally proposed, I heard they're going to open up the 102FM blocks and move Concert FM to this instead - but why not leave Concert where it is and start up this new youth network in that range instead? That way Concert listeners won't have to muck around retuning their radio.

Edit: looks like Concert will be moving to 102FM. While not ideal, at least it's keeping it on the air. Now as long as they keep all the announcers...

Hi, nah I doubt it will move to 102, instead the new service for youth will slot in there, otherwise its a lot of engineering time that achieves zilch.

The only reason for Concert changing frequency could be related to this post in Stuff comments that suggests that another has been reserved for it. I haven't checked the background. Most reports are just about 102 reserved for youth.

I suggested this on the NZ Radio Facebook page last week. 101.8 to 102.5 & 102.6 to 103.3 are reserved for Concert and a youth station nationwide and have been for about 15 years. This is in between National 101.0 to 101.7 and Niu FM 103.4 to 104.1. They should go one better and move the youth to the other frequencies and auction off the existing Concert frequencies to the market and use the money to fund all the changes and more."
