3D MOVIES SHOWING UP IN APPLE TV APP AHEAD OF APPLE VISION PRO LAUNCH 😲

This only applies to the tvOS 17.2 beta app at present, so, no point looking for it on your apps. 😁. Exciting news. I enjoyed several 3D films when I had a TV Set that supported it and I still have about 30 3D Blu-rays in my collection. I thought it was a shame that electronics companies decided to can it on newer TV's. We can still see 3D movies at selected theatre's (not sure where in NZ) but certainly overseas and on older TV's.

Apple, being great innovators when it comes to technology, are likely to knock this out of the park. Unfortunately, the initial pricing will be prohibitive to most. Not mentioned in the following report is that Apple TV + will be incorporating the technology into some of their programming. One of the first titles to be rumoured is Monarch: Legacy of Monsters

The Apple TV app on tvOS 17.2 beta is starting to list 3D versions of movies, which will be playable on the upcoming Apple Vision Pro headset.

In the metadata section of a compatible movie, a new “3D” icon appears alongside the symbols for Dolby Vision, 4K, age rating and such. The 3D icon is in the shape of a headset, indicating that the 3D playback experience will only be accessible through the Vision Pro.

Of course, we can assume the list of compatible titles will grow over time. Right now, the 3D icon appears on about 20 titles, including Jurassic World Dominion, Pacific Rim Uprising, and Shrek. It isn’t yet clear exactly what 3D frame rate and resolution is being made available.

Although 3D TVs for the home were a passing fad about a decade ago, it is possible that AR/VR headsets like Vision Pro could revive interest in the medium.

At the product’s unveiling back at WWDC, Apple demoed a clip from Avatar: The Way of Water to highlight how the Vision Pro can immerse the wearer in a rich 3D movie experience. Members of the press who went hands-on with the device were played the same Avatar clip, with many describing it as a better 3D experience than a movie theater.

Apple has not yet confirmed whether 3D will be included as part of the standard Apple TV app Store movie purchase price, or if it will come at a premium. There is some related precedent to it being included for free. When Apple rolled out the Apple TV 4K in 2017, it partnered with the movie studios to upgrade customers’ purchased HD movies to 4K quality at no additional charge.

The Vision Pro will be available in the US “early next year,” starting at $3499. It will go on sale in additional countries by the end of 2024. Apple is only expected to sell about 500,000 units in its first year.

Be great if we got the IMaX version 3d movies that used active shutter glasses, that was immersion.The haunted house roller coaster ride could see everything around me, bats flying at you water drops from sky. but it doubled cost of movie production.

I was a kid when blue red glasses back in 80's were big hype, still feel 3d still there. Watched Avatar 2 at the theatre 3d ended up watching without the glasses, was too much focusing see 3d, if Cameron did Imax 3d instead of double frame rates would've made movie tech marvel. My two cents

I spent several hours yesterday bringing my iTunes Movie List up to date. Its not a database, just a posh looking list that I made on my Word Processor. I checked every one of my library of 470 and I was surprised at how many had the wrong information. Some were upgraded some were downgraded. There is a possibility that some of my initial entries weren't correct (I am on elderly gentleman). Source Code disappeared a while ago, never to return and it is still the only bought title that is missing from my library.

I have read online discussions about the possibility of titles disappearing, but one lost $4.99 purchase is grudgingly acceptable. So, don't listen to the trolls that would have you believe that your library will keep reducing and enjoy the films and pricing that iTunes offers.

Is there an easier way to find what movies have been upgraded to 4K/Dolby Vision in Itunes? I have quite a few older titles on Blu-ray that i would probably upgrade on Itunes if it was now available in 4K/Dolby Vision. Example being The last Dragon. Have it on Blu-ray but now will have to grab it via Itunes as its had a video upgrade....and not being available on 4K disc bonus...at the moment.
