I think you will find most people are asleep at 3:30am. And Christmas day, yes my local video store is open on Christmas day.

sure most people will be asleep at 3:30, but not everyone. I've streamed many movies/tv shows around 1am in the morning. Odd that the store is open christmas day, I bet most of them would be closed.

Its relevant because NZ's high minimum wages affects the prices and therefore the consumer. DVD rentals are expensive because demand is low, and paying staff is costly. I have no idea how the video shop down the road from me manages to stay in business and I wonder if they even manage to rent out more than 2 DVD's per hour (Now factor in the minimum wage with that)

I think the struggle of DVD stores probably has more to do with the growing obsolescence of their business model, I don't think it can be sustained going forward because their market is moving away from them.

I've watched movies at 1am as well, just because the store is closed doesn't stop the movie from playing. But in saying that, what happens when your ISP has their maintenance at 1am?

And your logic as to which store is open on Christmas day is exactly the same as people being asleep at 3:30am

yes but the store being closed at 1am, does stop you from going to the store and renting something (i guess you could break in?). if your ISP is having maintenance that interrupts your internet, get a new ISP... I can't remember when i was last without internet... (probably about 6 years ago when I moved?).

sdav: Random question but semi-related. Do places like this keep a record of what was searched for demand purposes? I searched four things that never turn up on these sites and they didn't have them. Saving Private Ryan is never on these things!

Saving private Ryan is on Netflix UK -I watched it last week.

Totally disagree. Its about time that New Zealand wakes up and comes to the realization that overseas providers are now in fact part of the competition.

If they don't, well then its the local companies that are missing out.

I will spend my money where I get the best deal and value/quality for my money. Its not always about the cheapest deal and thats why I don't buy into this whole "buy local" way of thinking. If the quality and the price of the product is better here I will buy here. I don't buy the cheapest products (mostly china made) because they not always the best value for my money. I refuse to have a bleeding heart over local companies that don't take the initiative to compete with these international markets. Its there own fault.

Plus, people are talking about Ezyflix as if it some sort of gallant struggling "local" competition to the multinationals. It isn't. Firstly it's an Aussie company based across the Tasman. Secondly, it's majority owned by 20th Century Fox which is controlled by ...... drum roll ...... Murdoch's News Corporation.

In fact, with its locally-listed shareholding and shareholders, NZ headquarters, and NZ staff Sky TV is far more of a local company than Ezyflix.

I have read a number of messages on this site mentioning maintenance periods by the ISP, and by Chorus. If it is Chorus having the maintenance there are limited opportunities for finding a new ISP. Also, are you at home 24/7, actively using the internet that you can state that you haven't had an internet outage?

And if I wake up at 1am and decide I would like to watch a movie, I suppose I can choose from the 400+ I have at home, or if I was that desperate for something at that minute I could stream something. But personally, if I am going to spend the time to watch a movie I have to preplan the time, so I can make sure I go to the store before 11pm to rent one

I get emailed whenever my internet goes out, at most I'm disconnected for a few minutes a month.

Ok, you're obviously not the target audience for streaming and the conversation is just going in circles, you clearly want to keep the old video stores. But its pretty clear these services will no longer exist in the next 10 years or so. There are other options like fatso, but those will likely also be replaced by streaming services.

And these other purchase/rental services (iTunes or Eziflix) haven't matched the pricing of the local video store, or The Warehouse yet. It is my money and I want to spend it in the best way I can, if it is $3.5 on Blu-ray versus $7 stream, then the video store wins each time.

personally my time + the convenience of streaming is worth a lot more to me than $3.50. But, my local video store is probably a 5-10minute drive away (so 15ish mins round trip), where as a couple of button pushes is so much easier.

To be fair, I tried quickflix, on the trial, but cancelled it as didnt match netflix. I do rent from vudu probably about 6-12 times a year, their prices are pretty good IMO. Once quickflix freeview channel comes out, I'll likely rent from that (my samsung tv is set to US for netflix, so I cant get nz apps for it on it) assuming you can still rent movies without subscribing monthly.

And if ezyflix did a freeview channel, I'd use that too. seems like a really great way to make a client that most people can access without needing to buy additional hardware.

Interesting! I find that, and some others, so hard to find on streaming services and to buy online. It's my favourite and I have it on Bluray anyway!

This is my reason for streaming and also if I get a dud it's not a waste of money and within seconds can be watching something else.
