Agree about sport on FTA. I remember the days before SKY, do we want to go back to that? No, but if you still want the amount of sport and for it to be on FTA then the taxpayer will fund it.

I don't know much about the law in respect to if NZ first got it through but if a competition such as SUPER 18 and Rugby Championship was developed and paid for by PAYTV and was never originally on FTA can they make go to FTA? What if any legal issues would arise?

The rugger people will want the big bucks, someone will have to pay. If taxpayer pays then I want the taxpayer to put on the biggest and best movies for free for me too

And Nat Geo, and BBC channel, and F1 and so on, where do you stop?

I agree about movies, if going to fund sport for national importance then any NZ made movie in the cinema has to be free to locals.

Wouldn't making sport have to be on FTA effectively create a Monopoly also as FTA knowing SKY is not allowed to bid means they can bid lower. And in NZ where one FTA isn't that cashed means can bid even less.

Sport on Sky can always be watched at the pub.  Get there early, get good a seat etc.

I would PPV for ABs games if I could.  That's extra revenue and extra ratings (advertising $) Sky is forgoing.

The problem also with regards to pick and mix is that some people seem to think that if  pick and mix comes in what they pay drops a lot. Bit like going from a buffet to a normal restaurant and expecting to pay half the price.

They would want to pick and mix $10 worth this month as not much on, but if pick and mix did come in it would be you pay us the normal fee and pick and mix what you want. Too messy, thats why BB is unlimited, no fuss

I'm going to hold off signing up on this until I hear from someone who uses the US or other Netflix regions and see if when you sign up whether Netflix can tie a Spark Netflix  account back to NZ and block you playing other region content..

That model cant work here, too few people. The boxing is $49 and thats a low value sport for Sky. SANZAR wants big bucks, they couldnt get enough subscribers paying a high fee to cover that. Sky absorbs that high cost into their rights budget, so that overall, there is a good range for most people. 800,000 to spread the cost over

Yep - like an auction, or real estate closed tender there is often a reserve price.

And why, in this age of worldwide instant communications, are we still locked into distribution models based on geographical location? If sports or anything else are too expensive for New Zealand, maybe the problem has to do with this nonsense. Any sport that attracts paying viewers in this country will also appeal elsewhere. If there has to be region-based distribution, at the very least our region should be Australasia, not just New Zealand. This is an artificial construct with no legitimate basis other than greed of content providers who want to be able to sell the same thing over and over again as many times as possible. Australians are also fans of Rugby, as are other countries. New Zealanders keep getting overcharged for things just because we happen to live in a small country. If economy of scale is the problem, then increase the scale.

If someone signs up for 24 months now, and gets free Lightbox as part of that deal, is there a guarantee that Lightbox will continue to be available throughout that 24 months? Eg if Spark did decide to kill Lightbox, where does that leave customers who were given it as part of their plan

But if it has to be on FTA due to the law surely you have to take what is offered?

If it has to be on FTA (and paytv is excluded) and the FTA bidders and rights sellers dont agree on a price then it just doesnt get shown.  Thats how it works.  Just because you have a law that restricts the potential buyers doesnt mean that the seller will accept the bidders price.

It wouldn't work alone.  But how about as an option for non-subscribers: For people like me who have dumped their sky-sub but would PPV for ABs games?

Maybe that would reduce subscriptions by too much?

FanPass is pretty close to that, but allegedly poor quality and didn't have ABs games last time I checked.

Pretty sure that the AB's games are only ever on Sport 1-4 (and pretty much always on Sport 1) so they would have been available on FanPass.  That would $15 for a match (being a day charge).

Yep - even the most recent game against France on Nov 24 was on FanPass.  Who knew.
