is the tournament even being filmed in 4K? I know Japan are leaders in this sort of tech, but I can't find a source noting anything about 4K filming.

I read a tech media somewhere, can't find now, that RWC will be the event where Japan will test 8k to be prepared for Olympic games, meaning 4k is standard for them now and its up to the business which video quality to buy, 4k or FullHD, sorry this was long time ago and I cant remember exactly.

Android TV is not only NVIDIA Shield TV. It's Sony A1 TV series, it's the new Freeview recorder, the new Freeview streaming device and more. I would be really disappointed with strategy if Android TV is not released, seeing Freeview put a lot of effort into released devices running on that platform.

Yes, but I have no timeframe I can give you. I use a Shield myself as my main streaming device so I am keen to see it come through too.

Found something about 8K.

There is also the difference between broadcasting and filming it in 4K. I'm not sure we have the back haul to do 4K a service over IP? Maybe if it was satellite TV ...

I know here in Canada, Rogers (Sportsnet) and TSN will pretty much take nothing in 4K unless it originates from their own content. So it's pretty much just Raptors, Leafs and Jays games. No F1, EPL or such in 4K. Really annoying, and one of the reasons I haven't bothered getting a 4K TV yet.

What happens if I buy an early bird pass now, but (because I don't want to watch any SS until october) my Spark Sport monthly ($20) subscription lapses?

Do I loose it all? Or does the early bird pass continue once I re-subscribe?

RE: 4k there is La laliga soccer that goes over Asiasat 9 (Cband satellite) every weekend so that is some content available in our skys.

I've no doubt all the RWC in Japan will be filmed in 4K and probably 8 or 16k for the finals..not that we will see it in those rez.

Oh the irony. The biggest voice complaining about restrictive behaviour in the sports rights market kicks an own goal by doing what it said should be stopped.
