What about services like GamsGo, they sell the individual user slots for lots of different services, I'm sharing a Disney account with people from 5 different countries.

I can't see that continuing to work for Netflix accounts after this policy is implemented. Although, I'd side with Netflix against those services. In my view that's very different from sharing a password with a family member or friend.

I have Apple TV’s at home and bach so it will be a problem.

Sorry, copied wrong quote

Holiday homes and travellers using their accounts on hotel smart TVs etc while travelling will be the big headache..

But it looks like they will use some form of 2FA based on an existing trusted device you have on you (Phone/laptop etc) that has been seen logged in at your primary location

If its done by a "push yes" on your phone to allow this new device to have access to your netflix account for the next 7 days I cant see it being a major problem...

I already have the older generation worrying about what they are supposed to do when going to the holiday house.

Yeah, not a major for us, but some people really struggle with this sort of thing

They will probably start using (geo) location services to determine where you are.

I'm on Spark fibre and my MFA always says the request is coming from Auckland... I'm in Christchurch. Location services could be used to locate a phone or tablet, but not so much a TV or other device that doesn't have GPS.

Plus I think it would be a hard sell to force people enable location services in order to use Netflix. It's not against their rules to use your own account when away from home, and they shouldn't have the right to see exactly where you are every time you load the Netflix app.

+ lots on this, its your account, not your houses account, if you travel for work /go on holiday/ you should be free to take your account with you to watch...

Yes, so my take on what I feel they should be trying to achieve is that the account is yours. Anyone who primarily resides at the same address as the account holder should be able to use it (to the maximum number of streams), whenever and wherever they like, however, if you no longer primarily reside at the same physical address as the account holder, then you should need to get your own account or an account shared account.

Hardly unreasonable.

How they achieve the desired result without lots of false positives or false negatives will be interesting, but to be honest, if 1% of legitimate account use gets flagged and needs to be resolved by a support ticket, then shrugs.

The support issues will be almost entirely front-loaded.

A website can't see your MAC address, so it's unclear (at least to me) what a "Device ID" is when watching through a browser.

Fair enough, but how many use a browser on a PC or laptop to watch TV? I use an ATV others use another device thet feeds the TV screen. They have MAC addresses

On this, I travel for work, and almost never log in to anything on the hotel/motel TVs. In fact on the odd occasion I turn the TV on, half the time it's still logged in from the last person. I'm a terrible person, but I will find a movie, and pause it a scene that amuses me, then log it out.

Officially coming to NZ later in the month

https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/131179298/netflix-to-crack-down-on-account-sharing-in-nz-later-this-month

...it will soon start asking customers to confirm their “primary location” when they next log on to Netflix and then block access to the account from different locations unless it appears those customers are simply accessing Netflix while travelling, or from a holiday rental

...

Long said customers would still be able to watch Netflix on their personal devices or on a hotel TV, for example, when travelling.

But it is understood the “primary location” feature would prevent access if an account was being logged into from a different location repeatedly, or for an extended period of time.

Netflix said customers who had second homes such as baches or who travelled frequently would be able to continuing watching at both if they opened the Netflix app on their mobile while connected to the Wi-Fi network at both their primary location and second location at least once a month.

Clint

I assumed that we would be a while off yet

What happens if a "sharer" confirms the location next time they logon, to the detriment of the primary user??

Me! I mainly watch netflix on my laptop & desktop, & occasionally watch on my cell phone. I don't own a smart TV as I have an eye condition which makes it hard to watch on such a screen. If I accidentally log out of netflix on my browser, every time I log in again on the same device I get an email from netflix saying I have logged in on an unrecognised device, even though it's the same laptop in the same chair of the same house.

According to my devices page in the netflix account settings, I'm logged in from Swanson, Auckland. However I'm actually live in the Wgtn region. So when I get this upcoming request to confirm my primary location, do I put my actual location, or Swanson???  Thankfully VDSL with Voyager gives me a sticky IP, so that's a helpful thing, as the devices page does see that. But it does not differentiate between devices of the same type, for example I show two Windows PCs logged in in Swanson, using Firefox, and one Android device which is my phone. The only way to tell which Windows PC is which is to play something, which updates the date when it was last used.

I also use 4G wireless broadband from Spark for times when VDSL isn't providing enough bandwidth, and for a back up in case the VDSL goes down. (Yes yes I know fibre, but unfortunately this is not an option for my particular situation at the moment - long story which I won't bore you with). I tend to have my phone connected to my Spark 4G wifi at home. This 4G connection gets a new IP address assigned every 24hrs, and the location seen for each IP address I get can be anywhere in the North Island. Mainly Waikato somewhere, but sometimes Hawkes Bay, The Lakes district, Taranaki or the Manawatu. New World shop online often sees me in Queenstown. If I depended on this Spark 4G connection, which I MAY end up needing to do if I lose my VDSL before fibre is finally an option for me, then I will be well and truly stuffed as location is all over the shop and forever changing IP addresses. I may have to ask Spark for a static IP if I lose my VDSL before I get fibre (it's in the street, the issues are with getting it from the street to the house). I'll be annoyed if it comes to that though just for the sake of netflix.

I can see this being a real problem for anyone using 4G for their internet at home, especially when with providers who do not offer static IPs.
