The Fire TV has a locked bootloader but one of the XDA devs has worked out how to load a custom boot image...

Development on this is coming along fast! only 20 odd days to wait for mine to arrive O.o

In the review you just linked to there is a power supply with a US-plug. I see no plug pack there and the plug does not look like one where you can change the plug. So unless you mean something other than a power supply with exchangeable plugs (like some Apple power adapters) then it seems to me like you are wrong.

Cheapest way to deal with it will be a travel adapter. Warehouse or Dick Smith will probably have the cheapest ones.

My Fire TV landed on YouShop. It's $22 to ship to New Zealand, and applied discount code "THANKYOU15" which brought it down to $18.70...

Now to see how long it takes to arrive here in Wellington.

This will be interesting! My postage costed $22 from shipito, it apparently shipped out on Saturday (via some unknown carrier, i chose the 2nd cheapest option being Airmail Priority.) I suspect its sat at the local sorting facility until today. So its pretty much a deadheat at the moment, the guidelines for my delivery were 20-40 days though (which seems absurd, but time will tell!)

Im going to regret using shipito. I have accounts with both, should have gone with youshop! Ive only used youshop once (over a year ago) and remember it taking forever to arrive, looks like they have resolved that issue.

Heres my tracking so far, nothing since the 5th

Well mine has arrived this morning. Downloading update, and yes I can confirm the power pack (plug) is 110-240 volt. Now to set it up...

You can configure a static IP address and then it's own DNS.

Came pre-configured with my Amazon login and settings, didn't have to do anything there.

Netflix works and loads faster than my AppleTV.

Plex costs $0.99 to buy, very nice interface, like the newer versions.

Amazon Prime Instant video, awesome!

The Classic TV app didn't work. Even with unblock.us DNS set it still says only available in US, Canada, Australia etc.

Certainly nice to have them both on the one box. (I know, the AppleTV can do it, but it needs a bit of fiddling, and Apple Updates could break it at any time).

Can you post a shot of the Plex and Netflix UI if you get a chance?

heres the netflix interface. similar to samsung smart tv, ps3 etc

one thing that ill probably find annoying is having to click twice to open an app.

I do have the trial and yes it works. Watching a video now as we speak. I'm on Bigpipe VDSL and using the unblock.us DNS servers.
