managed to get it working finally.

my review based on early impresssions follows:

Library:
'watch now' library for TV is very weak. only 10 shows, all British and all older than 2007 (some form the 1980s)
movies watch now library is not bad. quite a few from 2011. about 360 movies in the total library

pay per view library seems odd. they said new releases would be pay per view, but have found a lot that are from 2006 or before (e.g. Van Helsing)

Interface:
pretty good. you can search for movies by genre, title, year of release, etc. each movie has a short synopsis so you cna work out if you think it is worth watching or not. Link to IMDB would be nice.

quality:
haven't yet tried streaming on my Sony TV or PS3. hopefully it will work.
stremaing on my laptop works fine, although takes quite a while to connect ot the stream. running it over a 20mbps connection only had to buffer once.
However, picture quality is very poor. I wouldn't even class it as SD. quite a bit of ghosting on fast moving shots
audio hard to tell. seems fine. haven;t run it over home theatre so difficult to judge

Summary:

as a standalone alternative to Sky, not good. wouldn't reccomend dropping sky for this.

as an alternative to subscribing to Sky Movies or Multiroom, I think it works. It's cheaper than either of those and has a good enough movie library to carry it through the first couple of months privided they upgrade it as often as they claim.
I won't be unmetered with my ISP, but doesn't bother me. I am on an 80GB plan anyway, most of which goes on torrenting (which will largely dissapear if I use this service). In fact i may be able to reduce my plan because I tend to torrent a lot of stuff I never watch just in case. with this, I will only be downloading something I actually watch.

freitasm: For those looking for a trial... Just saw this on Twitter: the qfxlaunch code should give you 21 days of free service.

Thanks, just signed up. Will give it a go when I get home tonight.

Websites back, streaming works. Managed to confirm it's coming off local akamai nodes.

I hope callplus and vodafone's nodes on APE are upto it

Akamai installed a bunch of new servers around the place for the Quickflix requirement. Sounds like they use silverlight smooth streaming from windows boxes.

You want to see growth then support it so they can do just that it may suck that there's no HBO but hey that's just the current offering and really people should not be so narrow minded to try other things than just what the big $$$ companies push out.

Just as an aside HBO own 15% of quickflix..... so SKy's monopoly may not last much beyond its initial period...

According to Sky's head honcho they don't have a monopoly on video on demand content:

Computerworld: “That right (to distribute content) is known as subscription video on demand, I don’t have any of those rights. The studios won’t let me buy rights unless I’ve got a way to exploit it. Even if they did, you can’t get an exclusive,” Fellet told Computerworld.

Perhaps the Herald are getting rights to broadcast mixed up with rights to stream.

Or the Sky boss was being economical with the facts...

this looks like what caspa on tivo should have been.

I havent joined yet but probably will if vodafone get on board with data.   I have looked through and I see you have 48hours to watch a pay per view movie but cant find how long for the normal ones. Is it still 48 hours or anytime in the month

HTPC Intel Pentium G3258 cpu, Gigabyte H97n-wifi motherboard, , 8GB DDR3 ram, onboard  graphics. Hauppuage HVR 5500 tuner,  Silverstone LC16M case, Windows 10 pro 64 bit using Nextpvr and Kodi

a movie usually will have an expiration date, that date is just when it will no longer be available for streaming (usually a few months).  so basically you will be able to watch those standard movies whenever you want (as long as youre subscribed).

netflix will put say "Batman (1989)" online for streaming for 6 months, then rotate it out and put up another movie, so they have say 10,000 movies online at any one time.  they dont keep every up all the time due to licensing, they would pay the movie studios xx for so many movies a month.

fyi: im making up the 10,000 etc numbers, just using them as examples

Not that I'm planning on it, but how feasible is it to record a stream from Quickflix (or Netflicks) for future viewing. I'm thinking mostly for saving on bandwidth if something is likely to be watched a few times.
I know saving YouTube streams is trivial, but I'm assuming the likes of Quickflix will be wanting to lock things down more firmly to keep their suppliers happy.

since the stream is encrypted, the only real way would be to use a screen recorder application, and thats why a lot of services only offer SD on computers and require HD to run on other devices.

With regard to the "There is no HBO because Sky have exclusive rights".

Is there HBO stuff on iTunes?

If so the rights can't be that exclusive, right?

They may be too expensive for QuickFlix, maybe too expensive right now, blah blah. But that's another matter.

It seems even more silly when you consider that HBO are part owners of Quickflix!

you may find that Sky has first choice of HBO shows ie you wont see Game of Thrones on Quickflix.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I just tried it.. Quality.. well.. not good at all.. I can't imagine watching it via the PS3 on a big TV (which you cannot at the moment).

I've seen DVD Rips which are better quality than quickflix. The Warner Brothers Logo isn't even clear on the Videos playing..

Seems quite a lot to watch but the movies available seem so old..

Data is coming from Akamai Servers..

I noticed that the Australian version of QuickFlix has HBO shows such as True Blood and Game of Thrones. Do you think they will be coming to the NZ version?
