Perhaps I am being dumb, but how would 5.1 sound improve (or even work) with a sporting match?

Is it so you can always hear the crowd in your rear speakers?

Vocal front and center, any music surround, crowd noise surround - sounds like you're there, especially at the cricket.

it would just be a bit of a random mix, but sky do it well.

I have Sky, a pretty comphrensive setup including atmos 5.2.1 and I've never noticed anything special. Maybe my box is configured wrong. Maybe it's just so good I didn't notice because it's so natural. Or perhaps in a fast moving game like Rugby there isn't a lot of sound processing.

Sky doesn't supply a 5.1 audio stream... so you wouldnt notice it apart from any sort of magic the amp itself does.

When I had Sky Sport it was coming up as 5.1, well over a year ago though. Didn’t test last Christmas as wasn’t me watching it.
My amp lights up how many channels of sound coming through and if Dolby digital.

For example Prime HD is Dolby digital, but only left and right lights up, so two channels.

I remember the crowd cheering from back speakers, and could also hear some of what crowd was hearing, front speaker was the TV commentary. It seemed like it was done well.

Not sure if it would improve car racing though.

They definitely do for a lot of their live sport. I guess the decoder has got to be setup correctly for it, I was using a coaxial cable from the decoder to my receiver. Most of TV1, 2 and 3 was in 5.1, (as it is on freeview) and most live sport that sky had produced themselves also was.

For both F1 and EPL their are 4k broadcasts available aren't there?

So does anyone know if further down the line their might be 4k options via Spark Sport?

(1) It says access can be via "popular web browsers". Any commentary on whether PS3 or PS4 innate browser/s would be likely to work?

(2) And just a day later I get an email from SKY saying ... "From your April statement, the cost of SKY Starter will increase by $1.08 per month and SKY Sport by $2.09 per month" My God, are they not paying attention? So like NZ Post.

Excuse my arrogance to the topic, but is this a common usecase with PS3/PS4 users? - i expect browsing on one would be a pain in the rear..

It's OK ... you gotta get the hang of the controller buttons (what does what) but there's predictive text and it's not hard at all.

The thing from my POV re Spark Sport is, if I'm not mistaken (please correct me if I am), casting (e.g. to Apple TV) from a mobile device means being on wifi. The PS's I have are on Cat 06 WAN from Spark Fibre then HDMI to TV. Quality is the thing here, not speed of typing a web address.

I'm hoping for A PS3/PS4 app as that's how I stream on my TV (Netflix, Lightbox, TVNZ, Neon etc). Otherwise I'll be forced to buy a Chromecast, which I know isn't a massive one off cost, but still seems a bit wasteful for one service.

Won't be needing Spark Sport until August for the EPL so will hold off until then and see whether an app I can use becomes available. Have got a 2012 model Sony Bravia and they mention a Sony TV app, but may only be for newer models. Although the TV hasn't been used as a Smart TV and needs a WiFi dongle which seems to have been discontinued so I may not be able to get hold of one (as an aside, would a generic one work or would it have to be the Sony specific one?).

Can't speak for the Apple TV, but for Google Chromecasts, the devices only need to be on the same network. Either the PC or the Chromecast can be connected via ethernet or wifi. Chromecast Ultras come with an ethernet port in the charging cable, and it's an optional extra for the other models.
