I'm a fan of Man U (born and bred in Stretford before anyone asks) - for me this is great because I don't have to subscribe to Sky Sports just to watch one sport for 8-9 months of the year.

@StarBlazer, I like the immediate statement of location, I do the same in case I'm called a glory hunter! Worse thing is my old man is a City fan!

Anyway, I wonder how many sky sports viewers where only passive EPL fans? and I wonder how many fans didn't want to get sky sports because all they watched was footy?

Why would someone bring up where you were born?

I was born n Wellington but you would struggle to find a bigger Liverpool supporter in ANY country than me. Why do I support Liverpool? My Granddad played for the reserves. It's in the blood.

I agree with the question to have been included in the options of why. I consider myself a passive fan but only due to continued erosion of my ability to watch football on FTA. Not a chance in England and not a chance here. At least $150 is justifiable. My wife is from Hull and an avid Tigers fan - there was no way they were going to get a prime-time slot.

It's of significant matter to most fans from the UK... Much derision goes on for those not from the native town or city of the club they support. It is truely rediculous.

Especially if that club is Manchester United. The amount of people that have said to me "I thought true Mancunians support City" - never been so offended!!! In the past there were political, social and religious reasons for choosing your team - not just which side of the city you lived.

How do you watch Man U compete in the Champions League then? You still need Sky for the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League. For me, I'm now paying an extra $240 a year to watch every Man U game live. And when it's not possible for me to watch live due to work etc, I have a subscription to MUTV so I can listen to the audio commentary instead.

BTW Born and bred in Christchurch, New Zealand and with a father born and bred in Liverpool, UK. Where you were born and your upbringing obviously doesn't have anything to do with how passionately you support the Red Devils!

For me I grew up with the floolights lighting my bedroom and being able to hear the goals scored.

Nope it doesn't, except in the UK... People who are British always have to defend their club choice.. It's ingrained in us!

This is the other question that I didn't think about, all the other stuff outside of EPL, how do watch that? I've got Sky Sports (HD) and also Al JAzeera so I'm covered but would move to PLP if they did a higher bitrate and open source / smart tv apps. How about others?

I don't. Like I'm trying to say (badly) I'd stopped watching the game because of the cost. Now at least I can watch them play again for a reasonable cost - and almost live. It'll never be the same as being there and I will probably never be as passionate about it as I was.

This isn't intended to be a "who's the bigger fan" as I have no chance of winning that - what made and continues to make all clubs what they are is the support they receive both domestic and internationally.

Disagree. I watched the Rugby on iSky on Saturday and the quality was far superior to Liverpool v Stoke that followed immediately. I was even streaming both the Rugby and the League simultaneously for a while and the quality was still better.

gjen: This is better than some streams on the internet as they are not closed down halfway though a game... It can only get better. Pause, fastforward and rewind is great and the ability not to shed out for a SKYHD box too....

Your standards are obviously lower than mine. Comparisons with illegal streams and promissory notes for future improvements don't really cut it, IMO.

And your price comparison isn't really valid either. It's apples and oranges comparing MySky with PLP. MySky offers a large range of viewing, better quality and more convenience. PLP is cheaper, full stop!

I wonder whether the impact of PLP have on Sky can be reflected just by "how many subscribers ditched Sky sports?" - an argument that is likely to be used by Sky to claim there's no impact at all.

I know a mate has recently ditched Sky movies instead of Sky sports (as ECL and WC still with them) in order to afford PLP.

I would imagine those with families are unlikely to ditch, I know I can't as my family watches normal and movies, and I watch other sports... If it was just me, I might have been able to drop Sky in preference for online as I don't watch much.

Not having a bigger fan competition... you're a Man U fan and that is all that matters :-)

I guess we are in different situations. I've been watching Premier League, The Cup, and Champions League in HD Quality via Sky for a few years now. The drop in video quality is significant and really impacting the viewing pleasure for me. I know some will comment that it shouldn't matter to a true football fan but I watch the game in a very analytical manner. I like following strategies being used, player positioning etc. I used to be able to see when wingers swapped wings but now I can barely keep up with where the ball is!

I would think the number of subscribers that only watched (or were interested in) football would be far and few between in NZ - IMO. I doubt that Sky would lose any sleep over it.

If on the other hand someone came in and won the rights to the rugby - well that would be a different ball game!
