Looks like 2019 and 2020 is going to have a number of new streaming services.

Various media conglomerates will be pulling their material off Netflix for their own new streaming service.

Disney has been pulling content from Netflix, for their new upcoming channel.

AT&T is creating a Warner one.

And NBC / Universal is joining the exodus with two new services: a freebie with ads, and a pay for a no commercial version.

Sounds like bad news for both Netflix and Hulu.

No idea which ones will show in NZ.

I just learned about JustWatch, so it may be worth checking out.

It will be interesting.

I think TVNZ is looking at a paid add free one as well.

Not sure what will happen with market fragmentation, as not all of them are going to get everyone’s money at once.

I expect most people will stay with Netflix, they'll get few subscribers, and in a few years they'll end up back with Netflix. Exception maybe for any site with exceptional or unique content, but I don't even put Disney in that category, given it's easy to view their material other ways.

Roku has been offering a similar voice search service for sometime for owners of Roku devices but with the added benefit of also listing where the show might be watched for free, and then listing the rent and buy options. I can't see any free viewing listings with Justwatch.

And with Roku, if a movie is not currently available you can flag it and Roku will alert you when the movie does become available, or the rental price changes. Justwatch don't offer this.

I compared the rent price for the movie "Lion (2016)" on the two services, as that is on the Justwatch movie home page now. Using Justwatch renting from Google Play it is $6.99 (standard definition only) and Roku renting from Google Play is (converted to NZ currency) is $4.45, in High Definition.  Justwatch offer it in HD from Apple for $7.99. So that's quite a difference $4.45 compared to $7.99.

I didn't bother checking any other titles so can't say if Justwatch are ever cheaper than Roku prices.

Does anyone know where to find a catalog to see what is showing on what streaming service?
Like, We all got shows we want to watch, but I'd rather not subscribe to 5 different services to watch 5 different shows etc. Makes torrenting very attractive when it would work out cheaper to buy the required series outright from DVD or web.

Remember back in the day when you could just subscribe to one service, Sky, and mostly get everything you need to watch in one place?

Can't wait to subscribe to 15 difference streaming services to get shows instead, who needs ease of use anyway!

If content providers are launching their own streaming services, there really isn't any argument for keeping the ridiculous regional content restrictions. They will of course, which means even more restrictions on accessing content and increased piracy.

I already "can't afford" Sky or Netflix. By that I mean I consider them to be a sinkhole for money, and not worth what they currently charge. More providers and increased inconvenience accessing their content isn't suddenly going to encourage me to hand over more cash.

I think the hollywood honchos have planned this all along, The world wanted content at their finger tips, watch any time, no ads YOU NAME IT!

So they responded, by spreading the top shows across 15 different $15 per month subscription services.

Look who won! The pirate in his mothers basement!

True , but ‘back in the day’ the picture quality was awful, and apart from a handful of channels it’s still the same.
Or maybe a couple of handfuls ;-)

Any idea how to get the filter to work , it’s greyed out even when searching, or selecting

Urgh.... just more services to give your credit card number to just to watch the single good show on the platform.

@Coil hit the nail on the head.

Until I can have a single source that lets me watch ANY TV show I want, and it lets me do that on the device of my choosing, I will continue to torrent.

They're all lit up for me, when say click on Netflix it stays lit and rest go dark, and can see Netflix programs only.

If search it gives results for all sites, and they all light up again, but can click on each service to narrow results down.

going to be interesting

i can see that i will probably end the year with

1) freeview app streaming HD live TV

2) Netflix

3) Disney + (this includes national geographic, marvel, pixar, star wars etc etc)

4) Google play for movie releases

5) Lightbox (as its free atm)

backed up some form of sports coverage - maybe fan pass or similar for key rugby or soccer games.. and hopefully with all the above functioning direct through a new TV !

Out of all these upcoming services Disney+ is probably one of the few that have a chance against Netflix.

Disney (Pirates,Frozen etc)

Pixar (Incredibles, Finding Nemo) etc

Marvel (Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Avengers)etc

Star Wars (The Mandalorian, Rogue One prequel series, new season of clone wars)

Fox (Avatar,Alien,Apes,X-Men,Titanic) etc

Thats one damn good library.

It is in a way getting back to the old-old days when the studio's had direct control of viewing vs revenue by way of showing only in cinemas.

I wonder if this will bring about a resurgence is pirating, since costs to the consumer will rise (presumably by up to 1500%) and the added complexity will mean it will be easier to P!rate Bay what ever you want to watch than subscribe to 15 different services.

Most people will probably be fine with Netflix + Disney or Disney + something else. Disney + WarnerMedia could be a good combo. If Netflix loses the streaming rights for Harry Potter / Lord of the Rings etc. Thats a huge blow.
