Definitely feeling overloaded on the amount of streaming services out there now. I’m currently with Apple TV, Disney+ and Netflix. I won’t be adding another. Will be interesting to see their content library.

My DVD rental spend used to be $12 per week. Close equal to four streaming services. Maybe I'll add one more. Maybe not.

Oh great, another streamer...

i feel we are about to go full circle soon.... by that I mean back in the VHS days, there would be one or two major distributors e.g. “village roadshow”, and they were what we now call “content aggregators”.

I feel this should happen soon..... one or two major content aggregators e.g. Netflix, and Amazon to “distribute” other content providers work.

makes sense.....it made sense back then too...

The market is getting flooded now. I only have Netflix, which I get free as I am linked to my son's account.

I may cancel SKY TV and get the Sky Sport Now subscription instead, which will save me $48 per month.

Its my iTunes account that takes my spare cash.

There is still HBO Max to announce their world-wide expansion, also the same for Peacock

Paramount is the home of Star Trek available in NZ on Prime and maybe others from time to time.

People keep rehashing this argument. The difference in the bad old days was lack of choice. You gave Sky a big handful of money and they gave you a very limited selection of what they thought you ought to be allowed to watch. I applaud the tremendous explosion of choice we now have thanks to competing streaming services. This is a Good Thing. People should quit whining about the cost of subscribing to all of them. You don't need to subscribe to all of them. If you can only find your favourite choices on six different services, maybe you need to adjust your favourite choices, or even go outside and do something else.

Except I can turn them on and off as needed, no hardware to return, on contract, no installer visit. Much better being in an app than a box.

I'm tempted to cancel sky sport after 15 years... I just don't have time. Football cricket and f1 on spark.

Primary use of sky box is as PVR which is superfluous with all on demand stuff.

I went looking for this comment... wasn't dissapointed...

Others have already explained the improvements of current vs what we had under "nothingbutSky".

Yup much prefer the choices we have now rather than being limited to sky.
We just subscribe to one service for a few months and catch up on stuff we want to watch then cancel that one and subscribe to another service for a few months. Rinse and repeat.

This is exactly what has been happening the last decade: Netflix, Amazon, Lightbox, Neon et al were the content aggregators.

What we are seeing now is the big studio companies have finally cottoned on to the money to be made in cutting out the distributors and going direct globally to consumers themselves with their own VOD service, and even more so with COVID-19 killing the cinema market.

That's why you are seeing increasing numbers of Amazon, Apple, and Netflix originals; they saw the writing on the wall and knew that if they didn't get some skin in the game, they would only be left with the scraps from the IP owners. The only reason Neon is still around is Sky holding the distribution rights to content that we can't get directly from the supplier here.

For example ...

Netflix $16.99, Disney Plus $12.99, Prime $5.99, Neon $13.95, Prime $9, Apple TV+ $8.99.

Total for 6 streaming services = $67, roughly about a half of what Sky was charging per month a year or so back.

It was too expensive!
