it's very simple. just do proper quarantine.

mingling around in social spaces is not quarantine - that's more like band camp.

the cost of proper quarantine to the incoming arrivals, country, economy, health system, anybody you can name - is much lower compared to these modern comfortable she'll be right methods.

Just send these fishermen straight to their fishing vessel and let them quarantine for two weeks far out at sea. They can do some fishing in their spare time.

We also need to come to terms with the fact that any vaccine will only be good for 6 months at the very most , Given we are now seeing more re-infections after 6 months or less .

That's not "fact".  It's a possibility that hopefully won't happen.

The number of cases of confirmed reinfection are small, no vaccination provides 100% protection, some of the cases of confirmed reinfection (ie by having genomic data for the first infection and a different genome for the second infection) then the disease was asymptomatic, which may suggest that there was some immunity from the first infection. (The immune system is complex, residual antibodies in high enough levels may "prevent" reinfection, but if those levels are low or absent that doesn't mean there's no immunity.  If memory T cells detect antigens and stimulate production of antibodies quickly  - stopping you from getting sick - then the vaccine worked - even if there's enough viral genetic matter to show up as a "positive" result on PCR.

I wonder now that this election is finally over, whether the PM or health minister will get back to fronting these stand ups. Hopefully our opposition parties are too weak to question the governments decisions from now on.

Opposition questioning the government's decisions is good/healthy - so long as media do the right thing and allow a response to technical issues.  I think I trust Shane Reti for example to be reasonable.  If they want to give Billy TK media coverage of his opinions - without thorough fact-checking - then we'll end up like the USA.

Ashley Bloomfield is back fronting the updates - I'm listening to him on the radio now.

They had (I think the otago fellow) On radio this morning, suggesting pre-flight tests into NZ.

Errrrr.... Pretty sure that's what middle east, russia per the current cases, and others do. Not going so well. And as we've discussed not so sure how that's meant to help our endgame

Ships have a pretty bad reputation is regard to preventing spread of the Virus,  you would pretty much ensure they would all become infected.....

While most people will recover, being stuck far at sea is not what you want.

A number of the MIQ cases yesterday are aged between 60-69 and others 50-59. at least a few of them will be the fishers.... if they have other underlying health conditions, there is the chance they could require hospitalisation....

Yes. So the point is that the 'powers at be' behind these schemes will put a whole lot more effort in to isolation and testing before they ever put people on a plane headed to NZ. Safer for everyone they encounter as the wing their way here.

As I understand it, and as was stated here, they did isolate, and were tested negative prior to boarding, except for 3 or 5 that tested positive and were excluded from the flight.

Yes. That's what is reported to us. It sounds good. It didn't work. Why are they doing quarantine this end if they did it already. Surely it is better to do all the quarantine requirements properly at the other end so that they are 100% satisfied, as a group, that they are covid free, and will confidently go straight to their fishing vessel this end.

Is there a middleman in NZ with his hand out wanting profit from running the quarantine at this end?

1. It didn't work, how can we trust overseas quarantine, let alone Russian?

2. It can get transmitted on a plane (who else was on it) at stopovers. Remember the Kiwi that transitted through Singapore and magically was infected later?

3. With 65,000 through ours, its robust, as robust as you can get if "its not a prison" The infractions as a percentage of 65000 is uber small, so lets just trust our end, the end we can control.

In 2 weeks, and not at our cost, these guys will be fishing to support our economy. Just as Avatar will do, and as students if they were allowed in would do, as would migrant workers to pick our crops if they were allowed to. I see hotels can't get staff

tdgeek. I'm not talking about the wider situation, but about a few hundred fishermen arriving on an isolated charter flight. Fishermen who have no interest in spending time or working on NZ soil.

Obviously we need the opposition keeping the government honest, and questioning things.

Albeit late, good to see people taking initiative in the immediate area.
