A couple double rooming is different in my mind. They have travelled together, are isolating together, and will stay together afterwards. Fishing crews may not be any of those things, having potentially come from different places/backgrounds and then going to work on different vessels.

I believe this MIQ was set up by the fishing companies and just approved by the government? I could be wrong.

I would like more details on this particular MIQ arrangement. It seems bizarre that they are double rooming them. IMO they should each had their own room so they were quarantined (isolated from other humans who weren't previously in close contact) properly for 14 days. When others who have returned to NZ as a single person had their own room. Is it a cost cutting thing?. Now it appears they are going to be spending lot longer in isolation as a result, and potentially others have now been infected too. eg those who people who weren't infected, but are now sharing with someone who was infected, prior to going into that room.

This has the potential to be like a cruiseship on the land with the high number of infected people. Potentially higher viral loads too in the building as a result. Prof Skeggs did express his concern about this situation.

Incorrect. Sudima was one of the first in chc when they started them up originally. It is on the airport premesis. So easier to work with.
Novotel airport is/was also a facility set up soon after announcing their potential covid effected closure after just opening from building delays.

Over flow is bussed to the city ones. But local demand has dropped to national overflow. Hence the air India origin families from akl distributed there.

The double bunking is a bit moot given that many hang out on the balconies smoking, and talking to the room next door over weekend.
Strict double bunking may be manageable, but for all the temptations ( Smoking/Exercise) of a close workmates catching up with each other.

From the other ship, test and Fly Crew changes, now Auckland community bubble ?

Bit puzzled about the 2nd person not picked up immediately as having spent time on the same ship as well,
all that stuff about being unlikely as only passing contact back in office in Auckland.

So Wespac HQ ( Non Customer Facing ), at least aleady self isolated from Friday.

Aussie, well then there is Bathurst, despite all the alcohol.

True. The balconies should have been locked. So multiple flaws

And again - all the fishermen travelled together on the same flight. Are isolated together and all are here to man fishing boats together.

There has to be a balance and what they are doing doesn't seem unreasonable. Do you think if one of two in a room test positive they are just going to let the other walk?

Travelling on the same plane doesn't make all of them close contacts. Supposedly planes have good air filtrations systems now, so not everyone on the plane will get infected on the plane if there is a covid case on the plane. If that was the case, we would have previously had huge numbers of positive cases arriving.

If you listen to Prof Skeggs interview, the problem is if a covid  case in MIQ doesn't test positive and they are asymptomatic, and they then pass the virus onto so their bunk buddy at say day 10 of MIQ.  That bunk buddy potentially then gets released 4 days later and then may incubate the virus for up to the next 10 days before showing symptoms. Eg they could then get sick in the NZ community or on the ship.

These tests are no where near 100% reliable. It is the 14 days of isaolation that is supposed to be what is protecting NZ, and the tests are just a 'belts and braces'.. We can't rely on tests that aren't 100% accurate, which has always been the case. It is that 14 days of isolation that matters. But if someone is able to get infected during their 14 days from a bunk buddy, then that is a serious flaw, which Prof Skeggs highlighted.

So you prefer a prison approach? Serious question. We have had 65000 arriving here, there isn't 7656 issues. Either you want total eradication so SHUT the borders or we need management so we can rebuild. You want the first. Or the prison approach. Now, if we had 7656 issues there is merit in that, but we haven't.

I would have thought that even those who live under a rock, would know to isolate until negative test result is notified by now!

Other MIQS already lock the balconies. Why do some lock them off if it wasn’t a risk?

Still many people have to be told what they need to do. So they should have been told to isolate. It is probably the same reason why people now aren’t scanning or wearing masks of public transport and planes even though the MOH have recommended people do. Unless things are enforced People won’t bother and we will end back in level 2 or 3 before Christmas. Hope I am not proven right.

Just one local case in Australia today (that in Victoria).  Edit2:  'today' being when I started the post (23 Oct)!

https://covidlive.com.au/

This site appears to show only 4 'imported' cases in WA (column with aeroplane at the top).  It seems in this case it is specifically referring to imports arriving by air only.

The official WA Health website shows all 6 were imported (https://ww2.health.wa.gov.au/Media-releases/2020/COVID19-update-23-October-2020).  Two of those 2 appear to be from the ship 'AL Messilah'.

I was tested twice and asked to isolate,  four times. Once on each phone call to the Healthline, plus once on each test. Also the person on the second call to Healthline ask me to say in my own words what to do - call 111 for emergencies and isolate.

Your friend should know better, after all these months. Works should have sent your friend back home, stat.

Does it depend on the circumstances? First test they advised me to isolate. Second test they asked me why I rolled up for a test. I said occasional medical condition with similar symptoms to covid so makes sense to get a test to be sure it's not covid. The guy said oh yeah sure and administered the test. No advice to isolate that I recall. It's possible I was not paying attention. It was a busy day for me and loud music was playing at the testing station.
