Maybe we will have a travel bubble with Oz next year, but they have had some pretty big stupid failures. NZs failures, including the most recently one with not testing or quarantining incoming crew replacements for ships is a failure that likely led to this latest smaller community outbreak. I woulnd't be surprised if something similar wasn't the cause of the big Auckland outbreak.

what failure, the ship one wasnt a failure , they came into  NZ were isolated as regulations , tested showed a positive result   and they quarantined untill they show a negative test . It's how our borders are meant to  work.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

The port worker was infected by the ship crew and then infected more in the community. You are referring to the fishing crew workers who were tested and quarantined. Not what I was referring to.

Batman:

meanwhile ... foxnews vs hilary barry

Gee, I wonder what political contest they had in mind when spinning this story?

"Don't be an egg" is of course New Zealand slang, but in the States it means someone questioning their gender identity, so maybe some puzzled looks at Fox News.

Given Fox "News" bad reputation, there's barely a mention of the story anywhere in major outlets.

The largest to pick it up as are the right-wing Daily Mail UK/Australia, and even then it's already scrolled off the bottom.

To be fair the way you worded the sentence in bold makes it seem like you were talking about the fishing crew

So what do they actually do in Taiwan WRT self-quarantine, isolation, testing at home etc?

Door knocks. And come chasing you if you went out with your phone on..

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/coronavirus-taiwan-update-phone-tracking-lockdown-quarantine-a9413091.html

Basically put the jeebes so up them noone dared to.

The system monitors phone signals to alert police and local officials if those in home quarantine move away from their address or turn off their phones. Mr Hong-wei said authorities will contact or visit those who trigger an alert within 15 minutes.

Officials also call twice a day to ensure people don’t avoid tracking by leaving their phones at home.

That's only part of the answer.  How do they handle transmission risk between and from household contacts, then as many people live in relatively high-density housing, apartments etc. - transmission risk between residents. ?  And testing?

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

I don’t think this has been discussed much:

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2020/10/covid-19-heavily-congested-ports-cause-shipping-delays.html

Definitely starting to see the effects of this now. I just wonder how serious a problem it will be

According to Worldometer we are now two days in a row with over 500k new cases per day. I really don't see any option now for NZ but to really batten down the hatches and accept that this is long term. Economically we will have to adapt to a new regime with some business types gone for a long time (international tourism) but it's how we adapt and adopt new lines of work and new ways of working.

But thank goodness we at least have a "normal" existence.

They were talking on Newstalk ZB the other night about ships changing to the smaller ports or refusing to come to NZ to avoid the extra costs.

I agree. Not much to batten down though, that's happening naturally. Exports and imports are ocurring although issues there as posted here. International tourism is over for a good while, travel bubbles wont happen for a long while. I guess where we cant get workers (fruit picking) we need to increase the wages and the price of fruit, thats fine. It will all evolve, which will be get by, struggle by, or be doing ok, and some will fall by the wayside, cannot help that

What is really interesting is that the huge surge in cases is coming from Europe,

US cases have gone from 40,000 to 80,000 but places like France have gone from 15,000  a day a the beginning of October to 40-50,000 daily now, other European countries are also spiking....

And then there are the stories coming out now that the Pfizer vaccine ( the one NZ signed on for) will require shipping at -80C.........

Unreal those numbers. NZ stayed at the low left of the Bell Curve, but its well out of control now elsewhere they are well up the Bell Curve.  It cannot be recovered IMHO. The best these places ever got was "ok-ish I guess" then restrictions relaxed and away it goes, fuel is everywhere. Seen two news articles today saying 2022 is recovery year.

Except the fishing crews were being tested and quarantined, so they weren't applicable  to what I was saying. I referred specifically  to  the shipping crews that were coming in and  weren't being tested or quarantined.

I see today that they are now deciding to plug this major hole, and test them. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/429484/no-room-for-complacency-new-testing-requirements-for-international-maritime-workers

I wonder how many other holes there are like this that have to take the media to identify and publicize.
