News today has one trying to return, booked out. Too bad, there is a virus on, be like the rest of us and deal with it, its hardly been a secret that MIQ is managed, Xmas is Xmas, no surprises as far as I can see

Christmas is Christmas sure, but the recommendation is still don't do international travel unless you have to. Clearly a totally unrelated event must be on this time of year that means everyone has to be here vs the last few months ;) What's the bet intending to be for 91 days too.

Although if we bite the bullet and open the OZ bubble most of this problem will disappear..

(The continued cases of MIQ workers leaking in to the community will likely remove NZ's insistence of 28 days of no community cases,)

- So if Australia can trust us, surely we can trust them,,,, VIC is looking very good, and NSW appear to have their cluster reasonably surrounded...

And there are so many people expected back for christmas (sigh) that they are expecting MIQ capacity. If anyone tried to now, we will see as pointed out a bunch of 'I can't get home to see my family...' stories in media.

Sure enough - https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/429747/nearly-full-managed-isolation-spaces-ruins-some-new-zealanders-christmas-plans

Full sympathy to them, but it does say to book your voucher then confirm your flights - not the other way around.

With the noise here when anything leaks, its hard to ever see an Australia bubble. We've had very few given 70,000 have passed through but thats apparently a poor effort here. By the time it will be acceptable, the vaccine will have been released.

There were three different genomic lines identified among the fishermen, so at least three were separately infected at the time of boarding the flight, despite pre-flight testing and quarantine.  To be fair, if there were only three infected at time of flight departure, it's reasonably consistent with the % infected for all arrivals, not worse, not better.

But pre-flight action clearly did not work, and there's another plane load coming in the next few days.

This would all be fine if there was no chance of transmission from MIQ / subsequent CT.  But it happened, so it's back to having confidence that we'll continue to be lucky.

Given the very large increase in case numbers overseas, even without increase in arrivals the risk of more CT here has increased and will continue to do so unless MIQ procedures improve, and to deal with the inevitable game of whack a mole due to poor compliance with use of the Covid app etc.

As El Paso reports record numbers of active coronavirus cases, the Texas attorney general sued to block local shutdown orders.

NPR: El Paso, Texas, Gets 4th Mobile Morgue As COVID-19 Deaths Rise

With new coronavirus infections surging and area hospitals already at capacity, medical examiners in El Paso, Texas, have received a fourth refrigerated morgue to temporarily store bodies, a county official says.

It is a stark reality for a city where coronavirus patients have been succumbing to COVID-19 at a rate faster than medical personnel can investigate their cases. El Paso sits along the U.S. southern border and is referred to as part of the Borderplex, along with Mexico's Ciudad Juárez.

"People that die are under investigation, to see if they died of COVID and to discern whether or not they had other diseases. That holds back the process," El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego told local television station KFOX-TV.

"I think you're going to see tremendous more deaths coming up in the next two to three days," he said.

As of Sunday, Samaniego said, the county had a backlog of 85 bodies that still required a medical personnel investigation, according to the station.

"My understanding is that we just got our fourth one," Samaniego confirmed to local TV station KVIA TV in El Paso Sunday afternoon, referring to the number of mobile morgues in place.

I'll say more.  Signing in or scanning with the covid app needs to be made mandatory at level 1.

I really can't understand why people don't do it - it takes seconds. Especially given the grumbling when we went back to levels 2/3 in August.

I get that it's behavioural science, but honestly people. Exasperating.

Its quite well established that shops/businesses have the legal right to refuse service and ask anyone to leave as long as they are not being discriminated by on a lawful basis.... you can happily boot someone out for not scanning,....

Yarp. Something many people forget and easily confuse for breach of their rights. It's not normally the smarter people that need convincing :)

Must say the last update slowing reads down has put off some of the drive-by scans I use to do. Now it's hold people up and get huffed at.

Fred99 got there first , a few posts above, time for specsavers :-)

Comment on RNZ earlier today there were at least 3 different genome virus lineages amongst Russian/Ukrainian fishing folk.

So I guess at least 3 different SARS-COV2 virus infections passed the test and fly process. 32 cases so far from this group.

Good: While a well executed test and fly process can help filter out a portion of cases from travelling a good thing.
Bad:  Its inherently leaky, so you still need isolation and vigilance at other end.
Ugly: Then you have to factor in conditions where tests certificates originate, plus false sense of security a covid free test creates.

Its a process that has validity to lower travel risk for travelers providing limitations are also recognized its no golden ticket to skip isolation.

My thoughts go to the MIQ worker, at age of 50 or so they must be pretty worried. Wish them the best.

Because not everyone is a tinfoil hat wearing nutcase. I have simply just turned on Timeline is Google maps. It tracks everywhere I go including when I leave a business and private locations that don't have QR codes. No need to even touch my phone.
People need to stop assuming that the Covid ap is the only way to track one's movement.
If the government just joined the 20th century and enabled GPS on the ap then the scan/tracking rate will go through the roof. The tinfoil hat brigade can continue to use QR codes and everyone else can let's their phones track them from their pockets.

NZ hasn't made the stuff ups that Victoria has made, and also delaying the  lockdown, so not sure we can trust some of the states yet. Also how good are some of their contact tracing systems, as they were reported to still be using faxes. Plus Australia don't have an elimination strategy like NZ. I think a bubble with some states is possible, even now, and some have done very well, but until they have no evidence of CT in other states, then it is going to increase the risk for NZ. Are mask and social distancing still normal in most of Australia? Also I am guessing our contact tracing systems would need to be easily linked up to Oz. So if someone is a close contact to a CT case in Oz, and they have comes  to NZ, that they detected as a possible CT close contact in NZ. There are lots of potential holes that could occur where people fall through the gaps, and the virus takes advantage of those. We just have to look at Europe and can see that what they have been doing doesn't work, as it requires countries to have to keep going into lockdowns when cases rise.  NZs system does now seem to be working, and we hopefully won't need a nationwide lockdown again, unless complacency gets the better of us, and our contact tracing falls apart, which happens when people aren't required to scan..

I went to some open homes at the weekend and surprised they didn't have posters for scanning in. But I kept a note I where I went. People were acting no different to pre covid times.
