The co-owner of an Auckland store where a manager allegedly told a sick employee awaiting a Covid-19 test to come to work said she never expected the woman would turn out to have coronavirus.

Stuff, this morning. Chris Hipkins must be pulling his hair out. How can you take 4 steps forward combating this virus when some are pushing you back 3.5 steps?

Can easily imagine that happening with the manager in NZ. "I'm not paying you for this. Suck it up and come to work or don't bother coming back." And the poor student on minimum wage who needs the job to pay the rent and knows how lucky they are to still have one at the moment feels they have no choice.

100%. We rely on public goodwill and trust to combat any spread, that doesnt work. Its one thing that Im sure many do the right thing but the rest are a serious barrier. They could pass a law to cover off the test issue, but as you described, that will still occur.

I'm still not getting how "It's the same strain, it's just been circulating undetected for the last week" is good news.

Me neither. I guess they mean there is nothing new out there, and thus no idea where else it could be

L4 the apartment for a few days till we see how testing goes, and start focussing on what legal power can be used when people are found to be lax, as in the posts jus above. Im getting a bit over goodwill and trust

Classic "not my problem" attitude.

Regarding the MIQ residents being told to keep away. Not much they can do to keep away from the general public (and other people in isolation) when they are required to leave their room, walk down the stairs, and assemble on a CBD footpath.

With regards to the general public being told not to mingle. Unless they know that the people standing on the footpath are in isolation, kinda hard for them to take any action. For the apartment building residents coming home or going out, kinda hard to know why there are a bunch of people in your doorway, or avoid them.

Where were the security guards? Surely their whole purpose is to ensure that MIQ residents don't mingle with the public?

Its not the money aspect that would have been the biggest issue (they could have claimed the COVID leave scheme)

it would have been that the store would have had no staff to cover her absence, ( and I suspect she may have been sole charge)

Because it means it hasn't been circulating undetected for longer than just last week.....

You can see photos here, Should note that the security guards don't have the power to stop the general public from walking along the footpath so will need to encourge then not to do so of their own will.

Yep, I have a mate, and he is a really good guy, that found it annoying and inconvenient when masks were mandatory on his 20 minute bus commute a while back. How can you combat the virus with that attitude.

True, but also hard to feel too upbeat about that given the defence force cluster has obviously triggered at least one instance of long chain transmission that our contact tracing and testing did not find first.

Locking down apartment buildings went extremely poorly in victoria. Not sure it is something want to replicate. Also, for any future apartment building cases, it creates a strong incentive for residents to flee, and stay with friends etc. Not the behavior we want to encourage.

Disgusting behaviour/attitude from that store manager, if it turns out to be correct that they encouraged the worker to come in while sick/awaiting a test. Unacceptable. Close the store or work in it yourself if you have no one to cover.

Slightly positive this case may be linked to the NZDF cluster - but it's still not really great news as this would indicate our contact tracing hadn't ringfenced it 100%.

I believe it's since been made clear that there was not mingling during the MIQ evactuation.

People's attitudes and complacency during this whole affair really sucks. These will no doubt be the same people who complain about lockdowns and economic carnage and the border and the government- but won't lift a finger to put in any effort themselves.

Maybe so, but in this case, one building for containment reasons. I guess either way, we already have behaviour that's not encouraging. Maybe we would have been better off if the MoH response was always poor, but the people acted very very well, we have the reverse in NZ
