Australia also reported weeks ago that NZ had been in discussions for both the University of Queensland and and AstraZenica/Oxford vaccine. Production of AZD1222 (the Oxford vaccine) started a couple of weeks ago at CSL in Melbourne and they're about to start production of the UoQ vaccine very soon.

However, worth noting that other experts consider talk of a new strain as speculative at this point.  Suspect it more likely to be the current D614G strain spreading rapidly around the globe.

But cannot draw any firm conclusions without more detailed genomic data.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/health/2020-11-18/adelaide-south-australia-coronavirus-strain-sneaky-contagious/12896262

It must be pretty hard to get valid data on incubation period when you've got an outbreak with only 22 infected.

Then the chances of a new and significantly different strain suddenly appearing in Aus where there have been very few cases is low, the origin genomically linked to the UK where there have been millions of cases - they'd almost certainly have seen a development like that in the UK.

So with all the BS the President tainted us with (and incorrect media reporting) at least there was a small shift today in our favour again from a horses mouth.

Pro. Said isolation isn't what they made out, and it's a hotel so no complains. Happy to do it

Cons. Made the contract tracing sound like it's good because they're basically tracking you. And his encounter like it's rampant despite precautions. Shows someone saying they were in for 24 days?!?!? Obviously an isolated case/mock.

"The words I would use is respect and loving-kindness. They have really done a good job with this.

"[New Zealand is] an island nation which I don't think actually makes a difference, the way they do it. I think anybody can do this if they just ask the people of New Zealand how they do it.

What we really don't need at this time is irresponsible BS sensationalist headlines like the Herald is dishing up. The ABC piece is much more measured. Read serious media if you want serious information and let the tabloid press die the natural death it deserves.

Its also running a very clivk-baity head line on the Arrival of a COVID positive ship worker in Samoa "on a flight from Auckland"

i'm guessing the case transited Auckland..

Seems even a few hours notice of a lockdown is too much

https://7news.com.au/lifestyle/health-wellbeing/adelaides-six-day-covid-lockdown-forces-hundreds-to-flee-interstate-c-1608465

I think a few health officials in NSW might be holding their breathe a bit for the next few days....

From what has been reported the first two links in the chain of this outbreak were very asymptomatic.... so whether "health screening... including a temperature check"  would pick it up is not clear....

Woke up with symptoms this morning (felt the onset of a sore throat last night). Went and had a test this morning, in and out in 10 minutes and the people were lovely.

The test itself was very cruisy, I'd struggle to even describe it as mild discomfort. In for a few seconds, made my eyes water a little, then out. Not the sort of thing I'd do for fun but definitely no biggie.

Genuinely impressed that my result came back at 0830 this morning. Negative result, as expected, but would have hated to have not been tested and turned out to have it.

Let's hope the Government is prompt in issuing a 'no vaccine, no travel" advisary, soon after these Vaccines have been released wider than' essentials category.

(and then move to mandatory when they become widely available)

This is looking like an excellent tool to 'add' to our Covid toolbox. (it looks like will need to be done 6-8 weeks before travel) - but no difference to countries which require Yellow Fever vaccinations before entry etc.

There is a well established workable history of mandatory travel vaccinations, so there is very little basis for protests/refusal.

(we will still need to require our 2 weeks Quarintine, for the first 3-4 months, to establish 'actual' underlying infection risk.) - but it would be a huge step forward, in effectively managing incoming risk vectors.

Of course there would be increased 'compassionate grounds' exceptions, for urgent travel - but no different to now.

I was on a livestream last night from LA. And had to bite my tounge. Nearly all others on it further denying either the existence of, or that it was not really an issue. And lockdowns will never happen again cause they're ontop of it.

And on the same breath, saying they were not going to get vaccinated if it was an actual option on principal.

They're beyond help. Obviously the excitement and promises we see from the top in media aren't received as much as one would think. Damage has already been done.

Very much so. As did many people on the socials. (and now the MoH) Given we had our own essentially transiting fishers come in from overseas. So not sure why reporters didn't also consider that theory before blasting it the way they did and not put a disclaimer.

Silly us with our logic thinking.

"We have made contact with our counterparts in Samoa around a case which has been reported in the media. We will provide further details as appropriate," she said.
"At this point, we believe the individual would have been in transit through New Zealand."

No new infections reported so far today in SA.  Still potential for some though(?) as they close off the daily case numbers at midday their time and still have 17 suspected cases.

Total of 12,000 tests in 24 hours is impressive - per capita equivalent to 36,000 tests in NZ.

Currently 3,200 in quarantine off 23 confirmed and 17 suspected cases.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-11-19/sa-records-no-new-coronavirus-cases-on-first-day-of-lockdown/12899240

Also no new local cases in ACT, NSW, QLD, or Victoria (now 20 days with no cases).

Singapore now 8 days with no local cases.

The whole state is essentially housebound, some would argue it is really millions in quarantine :)

Perhaps throw some more, while we're at it.

A lot of people just don't care about protecting others. They are exclusively self-interested.

If Kiwis can't return to New Zealand, perhaps this is a golden opportunity to get the luddites, whingers and their children sorted, despite their opposition.
