"We have made contact with our counterparts in Samoa around a case which has been reported in the media. We will provide further details as appropriate," she said.
"At this point, we believe the individual would have been in transit through New Zealand."

From Samoa observer:

"It was later revealed on Thursday morning that the man was travelling with 25 sailor colleagues from Europe who arrived with a total of 274 Samoans on the repatriation flight, on 13 Friday.

But is was later revealed after Tuesday morning's press conference that the man's roommate from his quarantine facility - another sailor, from Europe - had also been isolated for security reasons."

1956 deaths today in the USA.  That's the highest daily toll since May

173,000 new cases confirmed.

It's going to be a very grim Xmas over there.

Only for those requiring an ICU bed (there are none in many states) or on deaths door as a result of Covid.

The rest seem to be doing life as normal. While spreading it far and wide

Elect wants to do lockdown. T (and many non) supporters do not. And neither does the current administration

Soooo Grim figures? yes. Grim outcome? Not really. Way it's going, long expected

Can't get much more American than this story.

Reuters: Gun stocks tumble after upbeat vaccine news, lack of civil unrest

Shares of firearms sellers tumbled on Monday as promising data from a COVID-19 vaccine trial knocked stay-at-home stocks, and as civil unrest failed to materialize after Democrat Joe Biden emerged as the winner of last week’s presidential election.

Smith & Wesson and rival Sturm Ruger fell more than 9%, while Vista Outdoor, which sells ammunition and a range of sporting goods, fell over 12%....

CNN: Covid-19 outbreak strikes first cruise to resume sailing in the Caribbean

A total of seven passengers have tested positive for Covid-19 aboard the SeaDream 1 cruise ship docked in Barbados, according to a passenger on the ship.

Forty six passengers who have tested negative for coronavirus began to disembark the SeaDream 1 cruise ship to fly home Saturday, according to passenger Ben Hewitt.

Five passengers who tested positive also disembarked for a private flight back to the United States, according to Hewitt.
Hewitt, host of Cruise with Ben & David on YouTube, was among a handful of cruise journalists and bloggers on board the SeaDream Yacht Club cruise -- the first to return to the Caribbean since the coronavirus pandemic shut operations down in March.

The voyage was meant to demonstrate that increased safety protocols, including regular testing aboard the ship, could allow cruise voyages to take place during the pandemic....

"It's not a great development for the cruise industry," Sloan told CNN via email on Wednesday from his cabin on board. "I think the hope had been that the rigorous testing that SeaDream was doing would keep Covid off its ship."

...Passengers were tested in advance of traveling to the ship and also before boarding the ship, Sloan said.
"And SeaDream also was testing passengers four days into the trip," he said. "We were scheduled to be tested again today. That's a more rigorous testing plan than most lines had been discussing for the restarts."

The protocol is due in part to the strict testing required by Barbados, where the ship will be based for the season, Sloan noted.

"I think what this shows is it's going to happen. And until there's a vaccine or herd immunity, when cruising starts up you're going to see things like this happen. The question is how often and how big?"...

The use of masks on the voyage has been far less stringent.

Sloan told CNN that initially no one was wearing face masks, not even the crew. Crew members told him they weren't necessary since the ship was a Covid-free "bubble."...

And South Australia out of lockdown from Sunday - went into lockdown based on a lie told to contact tracers.

Seems the person claimed he was just a customer of the pizza shop, in actual fact he's a worker there which totally changes the dynamics of his case. Apparently the lie was told as there's something suspicious about his employment at the pizza shop eg under the table or not allowed by visa rules etc.

Their was already significant scepticism of what SA were describing as a "fast spreading" strain....

This indicates that it wasn't super transmittable by simply picking up a Pizza box.... and its unlikely there are not "1000s" of highly potential cases...

Indeed - you can see why that conclusion was drawn when this case told contact tracers they were only a customer of the pizza shop. Minutes of contact from a pizza delivery/pickup, versus working in close contact with a case for hours.

Think the right call was made based on the info they had at the time, it's just unfortunate that 'info' was based on a lie.

My guess is (totally uniformed by anything) that they were likely working there illegally and/or being paid under the table....

Washington Post: A scientist’s viral tweet called Elon Musk ‘Space Karen’ — as a way to defend science

Emma Bell usually uses Twitter the way most of us do: for browsing funny web comics, procrastinating and communicating with their colleagues in the scientific community. Bell, a postdoctoral fellow who researches cancer genomics using bioinformatics at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, will also occasionally correct a bit of misinformation they see online.

On Sunday, that misinformation came from Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk, who tweeted about rapid antigen tests to his more than 40 million followers. “Something extremely bogus is going on,” Musk wrote. “Was tested for covid four times today. Two tests came back negative, two came back positive. Same machine, same test, same nurse. Rapid antigen test from BD.”

This is a fairly expected result from certain rapid antigen tests, experts say. As the FDA has noted, antigen tests, which can give results quickly, “are not as sensitive as molecular tests,” which often take days. “This means that a positive result is highly accurate, but a negative result does not rule out infection.”

Bell quickly noted this in a retweet, writing, “Rapid antigen tests trade sensitivity for speed. They return a result in <30 minutes, but can only detect COVID-19 when you’re absolutely riddled with it. What’s bogus is that Space Karen didn’t read up on the test before complaining to his millions of followers.”...
