NSW tightens rules for quarantined travellers

https://7news.com.au/lifestyle/health-wellbeing/nsw-tightens-rules-for-quarantined-travellers-amid-threat-of-mutant-strain-c-1922503

" .. under the new guidelines, .., a case will not be released from isolation until at least 14 days after symptom onset and will have a PCR test at the end of the isolation period.

Positive cases will also undergo genome sequencing in a timely manner and all staff at quarantine hotels will undergo daily testing".

Sounds close to our rehashed regime?

Just like negative before flying that was announced soon after our own :)

Obviously as (until this week) we were in similar positions the powers that be have been keeping an eye on each other.

Do our MIQ workers need to be kept "on site", e.g. their shift is "live in" for say 7-12 days then 7 days off in isolation, then 4 days off after negative test to be able to go home... then come back and do it all again?

- would need more isolation workers

- "days working / not working", obviously an example.. could be structured better...

- would add a better layer to our current DMZ/Firewall settings (if I could offer a geeky term here for our MIQ border).

:-)

I assume the vaccine will solve everything. Then MIQ can be wound down. Despite the variables of delayed second dose, smaller first dose going around, what Ive read lately is that the effectiveness is based on both doses in a  certain timeframe. And one dose gives you about half protection, And its 10 to 14 days to be fully protected.

So, can MIQ be slowly phased out so that incomings have to be vaccinated, wait 14 days, then travel,  and we live with voluntary but daily checked home isolation?

You do realise that, up until a year ago, these "MIQ" workers were just hotel staff right? Front of house, janitors, wait staff etc... You can't just tell them "Sorry, we're just going to change your conditions of employment - you can't go home". You've only got one resource that you can do that with in NZ, and over 1600 of them are already doing 6 weeks on, 6 weeks off.

If this is the case then the vaccine will not stop Covid, only masks etc will. Over time everyone will either have had Covid and/or has been vaccinated, but Covid may be around for a long long time, if it can still infect vaccinated people but they dont get sick, they just carry it?

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/01/08/health/covid-vaccinated-infected-wellness/index.html

Health officials from Dr. Anthony Fauci on down are cautioning people that no one can dump the the face masks and social distancing behavior just because they've been vaccinated.

Why a Covid-19 vaccine doesn't mean that you can stop wearing a mask

That's because even people who are themselves immune to the virus might be exposed to it and transmit it to others. It can grow in the nose, says Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

"It's possible that someone could get the vaccine but could still be an asymptomatic carrier," said CNN Medical Analyst Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician. "They may not show symptoms, but they have the virus in their nasal passageway so that if they're speaking, breathing, sneezing and so on, they can still transmit it to others."

Given these unanswered questions, the CDC says vaccinated people should still use "all the tools available to us" to stop the pandemic, including wearing a mask and staying at least 6 feet away from others.

Vaccines on the table arn't really good enough to replace managed isolation. Nothing on the table is better than 95% effective at the moment.

We pritty much need to keep the border settings to the bulk (85% - 95%) of the NZ population is vaccinated, to achieve heard immunity. (Will be hard to achieve given no vaccines are approved for kids under 16.)

The above is optimistically assuming vaccinated people don't just become symptom free spreaders, something that has not been proven.
