According to marine Traffic its currently sitting berthed at the main wharf in Noumea harbour (looks like it arrived at 5:30 last night NZDT),...

I think they might have played up the "low on fuel" "storm approaching" a bit for the kiwi media....

Potentially. (It may be that Noumea doesn't have a large stock source they can use). Continuing to pull at the same heartstrings for a possible reprieve?. Now they want to come back with a NZ based crew, but having SUCH a hard time (and cost) to find anyone left from the industry suitable..

Oddly the live tracking on the ships website shows them as near Singapore, and the live webcam shows a 1:58 recorded clip of sailing in the open ocean.

I think we are very lucky that it is summer, as it seems to spread far easily in winter conditions, we only have to look at the UK, for a good example of that.

It spread pretty well in the Northern summer too.

Many other factors, population density, common areas of buildings, cars v public transport, social mingling etc come to play.

Contrary to what people think kiwis don't interact with each other as much as we think. We tend to keep to small social groupings.

And places we go to are not as crowded as they are overseas.

The Ponant website is definitely making things up. Looks like they're out for a spin (1600Hrs 2/02/21), but destination is currently showing as Noumea. https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/shipid:5545628/

Oblivian: Still a little odd why the demand has continued. The theory was pre christmas it was returnees wanting to beat Christmas to see family. But there's no sign in decline with the same number of beds since.

People's circumstances change. They lose jobs, change family and health circumstances etc. When there is already pent up demand being constrained it takes a long time to push that down the line.

The World is on fire, COVID is killing thousands of people a day in Europe and the States,  Kids haven't been to school since April 2020 and these are few signs of it getting better in the near future, NZ ( and OZ) look highly attractive, if you can find work down in this part of the world why wouldn't you come down....

The only hope for MIQ is a TT bubble that will take OZ arrivals out of the pool and hopefully allow many more people in from the rest of the World,

But MIQ numbers may get better because of the actions of others, the UK-Dubai Shutdown has taken out a major route home and will likely see arrivals fall for a while...

It's kind of what I was getting at - as far as I knew the whole idea was we had a flooded specialist sector. and it's only really the specialist sector that you can get in for other than being a New Zealand citizen

I didn't want to openly think that it may be made up of people that thought it would blow over in 3 months, realising it hasn't. Along with circumstantial. But I guess we're on the same page afterall

Emirates are going back to the UK. Twice a week, flying in empty and taking people out. It blocks out there inbound concerns https://amp.9news.com.au/article/5c69d793-06d9-4b82-98bf-fd3632eb0f1

Guess it'll remain a mess unless there are measures to make it less attractive like our neighbors

No destination showing now, but doing 8.6kn at 178 deg. Not much else south of New Caledonia other than New Zealand...

Presumption is that they would have left the 61 crew with no visa's behind, picked up some supplies and are now heading to NZ.

If the replacement crew they recruite don't have STCW Basic, I think the course only take's 9 days. Might have to cancel the first cruise....

Ac
RNZ checkpoint tonight taking to the company CEO who owns the board.
She said they are expecting a decision tonight from immigration before deciding on if to sail to NZ. She also said their NZ recruitment agency has found 6 people with the required qualifications to work so far, short of the 61 they need.

However personally I say tough sh*t. Get your ducks in a row before sailing here. You made assumptions and tried to short cut the system. If they can find 6 people in a couple of days they could have found at least half of they had tried. At best the got poor advise about visas.

The consequences of COVID conspiracy theories ...

The Washington Post -
Wisconsin pharmacist who destroyed more than 500 vaccine doses believes Earth is flat, FBI says

today

When a pharmacist discovered that 57 vials of the Moderna vaccine were left to spoil outside a Wisconsin clinic’s refrigerator in December, the worker immediately suspected a colleague who had spread false and outlandish claims, according to court records.

For months, Steven Brandenburg, the overnight pharmacist at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton, Wis., had said he thought the vaccine would harm people, make them infertile and implant them with microchips.

Now, federal authorities say his belief in debunked claims went beyond the vaccine.

The pharmacist, who has agreed to plead guilty to charges of attempting to spoil the vaccine, also believes the Earth is flat and that the sky is not real, according to court documents. ...

And as predicted MIQ is just becoming a total lottery. Looking this morning there are now 3 night available until the end of May (1st April, 25th April and 23rd May a matter of days after this became available). It's gonna be a total shambles in the 2nd half of this year as people start traveling again.

Are people going to start travelling in the second half of this year? I though NZs borders are going to be closed for the rest of the year. Except for maybe an NZ - OZ bubble. Until NZ has immunity I can't see how travel is possible, and as are vaccination program looks to be behind other countries, I can't see much travel occurring for a long time yet

It would be hard to justify to manufacturers that we should be further up the queue compared to other countries who are being ravaged.
