Fred99:

And perhaps in the 21st century, if we don't get our sh*t together to restore "social trust", then we're headed for a series of ongoing disasters that we'll never overcome without losing the benefit of the "freedoms" that we enjoy.

"We've been lucky so far" might be wrong, repeatedly managing to contain "lapses" in containment might actually be evidence that rather than "luck", the right balance has been consistently struck.

I feel so. Ive never bought into the frequent luck commentary, its always been with a risk, but when people lie that puts contact tracing out the door, and it extends a lockdown as the virus has had an opportunity to travel wider. Maybe a wake up call (again)

Minister Hipkins is on moreFM now reinforcing that

As much as they want to make an example. It will likely deter and cause more of the same.

But yes. As this dude has gone bananas without giving a damn. The likely hood is of more cases, extended tracing. And god forbid not a 4 in our future

Yep. Basically they have now made them an example, without explicilty stating that, and fair enough. We now have well over a million people and the businesses therein paying the price when only the team of 4,999,997 did the right thing

There is no requirement to self isolate after a Covid test awaiting for results, and the MoH website and the flyer you get at the time all says this. You are only required to self isolate if you have had symptoms, and the person performing the test will provide you with further information - this is assuming of source that you have actually told them you've had symptoms.

The call we received advised us to self isolate until results of test are known. Neither of us have symptoms and not required to get tested at this stage. We were advised that we should know more by today or Tuesday.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

You can't just cancel all flights. What should the thousands of people from outside Auckland who are then stuck in Auckland do? What should the thousands of people from Auckland stuck outside Auckland do?

This would be total carnage - which is why flights all ran today. Not to mention flights still need to fly outside Auckland, and planes need to move around. It takes time to organise all of that.

I can kind of get the weekend thing even though this should not be a normal weekend with the "do not enter do not leave Auckland rule. However looking at Flightradar this morning it looks like business as usual with a stream of flights in and out of Auckland from and to all centres in Aotearoa.

But you can't see how many are on them...

ANZ have already announced they have cancelled multiple AKL flights.

But remember they are Chess pieces. They don't keep flying all night to move around the country to be ready at location scheduled for Wellington to CHC the next morning. They sit on the ground at the 3 main airports, and move during the following morning to meet schedules. Passengers or not.

We can blame people breaking the rules all we want, but it doesn't change the fact that a fundamental failing by public health is still a real issue here.

If the original Papatoetoe high school student and family had been contacted by MoH or DHB staff and been tested when everybody else at the school had been tested then we potentially wouldn't be in the position we are now. You would have probably had no KFC or Kmart case, and the 21yr old would probably would not have been in contact with the family.

The fact they just kept trying to ring them for over a week and nobody seemed to think that maybe going around to door knock was a smart idea now looks like a very big oversight.

There have been significant cancellations today in and out of Auckland for passengers. Most passengers booked on flights ex AKL today found their bookings all cancelled. If you have an exemption to fly you're still able to.

People and planes still need to fly around though. How is somebody supposed to fly from say Whangarei to Wellington? Their only option is through Auckland.

How is freight supposed to get around the country if planes stop flying? How are essential workers supposed to get around the country? Level 3 still sees large numbers of people flying.

JaseNZ:

All flights out should have been cancelled end of.

Put up road blocks etc but hey we will let thousands fly out instead.

So now it could be transferred out of Auckland to where ever they are traveling.

Sorry I cannot see the logic behind that.

Do they have the same level of checking as a road block ??.
If you turn up to a road block and say I am going home do they just let you through ??

I thought you could only move around if you were deemed essential

Genuine questions I don't know the answer to.

So. Let's just list the failures of this person.

Broke L3 quarantine, went to see family who later tested positive.

Went to the gym whilst sick and pending a test to confirm covid.

Failed to disclose his contact with the family that had covid, essentially causing NZ to go into lockdown.

Is that about right?

On my community facebook page today there are quite a few people shamelessly arranging to break the spirit of level 3 requirements by buying/selling/free stuff.

e.g. because it is lockdown I want to do a project that uses broken pottery, if you have some I will pick up.

e.g. because it is lockdown does someone want to come around and pick up 3 piles of old bricks I am giving away

Yet to see any push back.

That makes a lot of sense. I guess I could say do we have to babysit everyone? In todays world of phones, and these people aren't 88 years old, why did they not answer the multiple calls?

Are MOH calling from hidden numbers, in which case maybe phone set to reject unknown callers?
