DS248:

Trans-Tasman travel bubble date to be announced on April 6 - over 2 weeks but even announce a date

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/300258584/live-pm-will-announce-commencement-date-for-transtasman-travel-bubble-on-april-6

The Government is really taking the Pi$$ here,

They know what the expected date is (likely end of April) - and they should have done the work to make it possible....

All they are doing is Timing,

They are hold off the date so they can announce a Cook Islands Bubble when the CI PM is in NZ at the end of this week/beginning of next week

So setting a date to set a date........

No decision is always the easiest decision to make.

it's like having meetings to plan a meeting

It's not actually the easiest decision to make.  It's much easier to make a decision / take an opposing position on something when you're not the one who's going to be held responsible for the consequences if something goes wrong.

You mean like the last six months since Australia opened quarantine free inbound travel from NZ?

What have the officials been doing in that time? And yes, no decision still makes you responsible.

How many outbreaks have they had in that time?

There are still some travel restrictions in place for travel within Australia.

Which governments in Australia haven't opened borders "properly"?

And which travel restrictions are in place within Australia currently?

Australia is a federal system and the states "have executive authority to legislate on matters concerning their citizens, with the only limitations being on subjects of national importance, such as defence and foreign policy."

There's different rules in each state for entry and passage between the states. For example Victoria has unilaterally closed it's border and international flights can't land there. The federal government can't do a thing about it.

It's not a particularly difficult problem to overcome, there's just a layer of complexity there that doesn't exist in NZ.

Northern Territory at the moment.  Test and self-quarantine if you're from a "high risk" area (defined).

Restrictions in other states revoked only about a week ago.

Qld has a particular issue with potential movement of infection from PNG via Torres Strait islands, they're prioritising vaccination in N Qld to try and ringfence it.  Boigu is an inhabited Aus Island - part of Queensland - it's 6km from PNG.

Anyway, I'm staggered that so many people think it's "easy" to join in to a bubble with another nation with different state and federal governments, and have "what if" scenarios mapped as to what the best response should be when there's an outbreak which could happen anywhere.

In coming months I'm pretty certain that we'll have increasing "lockdown fatigue" and resistance to compliance with prevention measures when there is an outbreak,  and that'll be long before we get even close to being "safe" from vaccination programmes.
