At Masterton Station this morning there was a lady handing out very professionally produced leaflets about why we should not be wearing facemasks. She was also supplying credit card sized "I am exempt from wearing a face mask" cards which were done with all the right colours, fonts etc to look almost official.

I despair....................

Edited to add that they are being handed out at Carterton Station as well. Obviously co-ordinated.

Obviously a bit of a nutter because mask wearing on trains and buses is pretty low anyway, and there is zero need for a card if you're not wearing one because nobody will query it anyway.

Fascinating article into the blood clotting issue and links to heparin and HIT antibodies in people who have developed the clots after vaccines.

martyyn:

No one is saying there aren't businesses and individuals who have really suffered and I genuinely feel for them. But I'm challenging the view the whole country is in turmoil as some would lead you to believe.

My clients include builders, sparkies, plumbers, driving instructors, retail stores, garden stores, building inspectors, vehicle sales, leasing companies, road maintenance, traffic management, civil engineering, towing companies, counsellors, lawyers, accountants, yoga teachers, sports clubs, sports stores, food wholesalers, manufacturers and car mechanics, from Wellington to Auckland.

They are all operating as normal (expect for the obvious scanning and masks where appropriate). Every one I've spoken to took advantage of the wage subsidies so none we're forced to lay off staff and several have taken on more staff in the last couple of months.

House prices are going through the roof (if you'll excuse the pun) around here and it's noticeable how the local car fleet has been upgraded in the last 12 months. People are spending money which is a sign they feel comfortable with the future.

In the last six months I've travelled four times to Auckland, twice to Napier, once to Hamilton and New Plymouth. We've been through Picton, Nelson, Kaikoura, Christchurch, Mt Cook, Cromwell, Dunedin, Greymouth and Blenheim. I think I've seen a handful of masks (mostly on bus/taxi drivers) and the number of people not scanning QR codes is really quite shocking.

But IMO that just goes to show how normal people think everything is, not that they necessarily think the rules don't apply to them or they are thoughtless of those under any kind of restrictions.

Yeah the economy here in Canterbury is booming, Guess that's want happens when the government starts chucking around taxpayers money without care. I'd love too see some of these business have to pay the wage subsidy back as clearly many of them didn't need it, I know a guy who claimed 20 weeks susbsidy for his staff despite only been closed during the level 4 lockdown, rest of the time he was Business usual so really he banked 15 weeks wages for around 20 staff members. Nice little taxpayers gift for him and I'm sure this applies for a lot of other businesses too.

Actually the Wairarapa Line daily commuter services are very compliant with close to 100 % compliance

I only catch the train normally a 2-3x per month (GF is most days). My train home to the Hutt on Friday at 8:30pm was probably 30% mask wear at most, even the guard wasn't even wearing one.

During the peak mask wearing seems to have dropped significantly as well.

Thing was they met the requirements of the subsidy - and many people applied in the very first week before the rules were significantly tightened up. It was such a poorly drafted piece of legislation that was simply rushed - there was zero reason why it couldn't have gone through some proper process and a few days delay to get it right.

Treasury was forecasting an economic apocalypse and a "few days" to seek perfection when locking down would have made a huge difference.  It's very easy to lay off non full-time / casual employees -  in the blink of an eye.  Many of those casualised jobs are in the same industries (tourism and hospitality) that was always going to be hit hardest.

I wish these posts which read like a collection of political hit jobs gleaned from NZ Herald opinion pieces or conservative "talking points" from a yellow flag waving political rally in Epsom would b*gger off to the forum where they belong.

I take peak services on the Kapiti line every day, and I would say compliance is around 90%. I often see schoolkids not wearing them, but it's quite rare to see an adult without one.

Having said that, I'm not convinced that masks are adding a lot of value because most people remove them as soon as they step off the train and onto the crowded platform.

I think even 99.9% of ordinary people who'd have to use "IANAL" as a disclaimer would give him better advice than whatever the voices in his head are telling him what to do.

Yup

"Rupa missed earlier court appearances he was supposed to be at, claiming his health would be jeopardised if he came during lockdowns."

This is a bit rich for someone who is charged with failing to comply with the Covid-19 Public Health Response Act.

It appears that rationality is not a strong point.

So he cunningly managed to get less than 60% of his normal turnover despite BAU in a booming economy?

I catch a unit to Upper Hutt and then a Wairarapa train through to Featherston in the evenings. Generally I notice that people on the units are very slack at mask wearing, but those on the Wairarapa train are pretty good. In saying that, the south bound Wairarapa train stops in Upper Hutt in the evenings when I'm waiting to go north bound - and I see a lot more people not wearing masks on the south bound service.

I guess if it's not going to be enforced, what are we to expect will happen?

no the threshold for claiming the subsidy was IIRC - "actual or predicted reduction in turnover"

Well Vanuatu is one of our Pacific neighbours, a source of RSE workers arriving here, and had been relatively C19 free.

The other aspect is how come a worker with Covid ended up in the sea?   You hear stories of how some crew are treated, if true then biffing a dead body over the side for the sharks - in the hope that you can cover up an onboard epidemic of Covid - lest that disrupt "normal operations" and profit for the owners, it seems probable enough to be newsworthy.
