[quoted] Fourpeak:
I know a guy who claimed 20 weeks susbsidy for his staff despite only been closed during the level 4 lockdown, rest of the time he was Business usual so really he banked 15 weeks wages for around 20 staff members.[/quoted]

So he cunningly managed to get less than 60% of his normal turnover despite BAU in a booming economy?

no the threshold for claiming the subsidy was IIRC - "actual or predicted reduction in turnover"

Presumably, when his actual turnover is disclosed, he will need to justify his prediction and/or repay the subsidy.

At Masterton Station this morning there was a lady handing out very professionally produced leaflets about why we should not be wearing facemasks. She was also supplying credit card sized "I am exempt from wearing a face mask" cards which were done with all the right colours, fonts etc to look almost official.

I despair....................

Edited to add that they are being handed out at Carterton Station as well. Obviously co-ordinated.

did you report this to the NZ police?

This is like those android /iOS game where you build defenses against wave after wave of alien invasion.

Ps these games do not have a fixed ending, the aliens never give up

Wouldn't expect it to have any impact at all on the bubble. I'm curious why you think it would.

Not if it does not spread further.  Classed as a border case with low risk of further transmission = 'QFT Continue'.

The person cleans planes from high risk countries and had already been fully vaccinated (early in the campaign) and was previously tested on 12 Apr before testing positive yesterday.

so he's had 2 pfizer doses, 1 month ago, and is now an asymptomatic carrier who may or may not be infectious - is that right?

Yip,  It would be interesting to see what the CT count was, ( as an indicator of viral load), I would guess they were pretty asymptomatic as it was a regular cycle test as opposed to a test taken when one feels unwell...

If they have a family/households close contacts that have also been vaccinated (as they should be) this should reduce further the chance of additional spread.

I don't think they need to be turning the planes around quite yet....

Does highlight that even the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is not 100% effective and that precautions are still required while the virus is still circulating.

Kind of curious to how much of the virus itself is present for a fully vaccinated person to be exposed enough to still get infected. I'd imagine planes coming in with a dozen or more cases substantially ups the ante a bit.

i don't think this can be concluded from the events noted as the guy is asymptomatic.

ie is he "infected" with the virus, or is NOT "infected" - who knows from the article

was he exposed to the virus, yes he was, the virus definitely trying to infect him.

presumably it takes time for the body to hunt down every single virus.

but whether he was successfully "infected" you have to ask the DG of Health that question. not that any journalist would think to do that.

i could be wrong though, he could very well be deemed infected who knows. nothing in life is binary.

The vaccine isn't a forcefield. If you're vaccinated you can still breathe in virus particles, and then have them present when you're tested. The vaccine greatly reduces the likelihood of feeling sick, but it doesn't repel the particles.

This is something a lot of people don't understand.

In the case of this border worker it could be a classic example of the vaccine working perfectly - remembering that the purpose of the vaccine is to prevent somebody becoming ill.

The vaccine does not stop you from contracting the virus, and may not fully stop you from spreading it - this is the critical thing right now that we don't know.. However if somebody does have a significantly reduced viral loading (which is what data is showing) and is asymptomatic and not sneezing or coughing where they could cause droplet spread then the chance of them spreading the virus is significantly reduced.

They've had thousands of confirmed infections >14 days after final dose in USA, 6,000 known, probably an underestimate.

This is a 0.007% "failure rate".
Maybe better to look at it:  So far the "success rate" has been 99.993%.

(neither technically correct, but it'll do - vaccination works very well so far).
