Interesting.

The poster shows Groups 1 & 2 completed by end of May.  That clearly conflicts with the planned numbers in https://www.health.govt.nz/system/files/documents/pages/covid_vaccinations_04_05_2021.xlsx.  The latter shows 581,932 cumulative doses by the week ending 30 May vs ~1m doses required for Groups 1 & 2.  A large discrepancy!

That poster was created on 16 March, just as it was kicking off. The spread sheet was updated yesterday - I would expect the values to change as more info, more idea of how long it takes to actually vaccinate someone, better idea of vaccine supply

Does anyone know if this will affect travel from Sydney? I have a family member who is supposed to arrive tomorrow. I can't find anything on MOH or any other of the usual sources.

If they can postpone travel I would. Stopping travel for a few days is somewhat likely.

Edit: Reports say Hipkins has announced no change. I'd still avoid it if I could.

UPDATE: Journos on Twitter say Hipkins will be providing an update on the bubble at 5:40pm tonight,

To be fair, the article in the SMH was a bit ambiguous.

Anyway, they've linked the case (man - and presumably his wife) to a returned traveller who was quarantined, then developed covid.  The case is the B1.617.2 variant (originally found in India) but that is (yet?) to be classified as a "variant of concern", so the Premier won't lock down.  This is rather dumb IMO - but there you go, Liberal state, business matters.  "It's not yet proven" that this variant is a contributing cause of the disaster in India isn't very reassuring.  It needs to be proven that it isn't - and as the mutations seem to indicate that it's more contagious and more likely to be an escape variant, caution is needed.

They've also found C19 traces in sewage from the inner west of Sydney, so if the man and his wife didn't poop there in their travels, there could be other CT case(s).

Anyway, Sydney's in a kind of lockdown level 1.5 (using our system).

and sydney has a bubble with NZ right?

edit - HAD

Possibly - yes.

Since you posted that, the US has announced:

“This is a global health crisis,” Katherine Tai, the US trade representative, said in a written statement. “The extraordinary circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic call for extraordinary measures.

“The administration strongly believes in intellectual property protections, but in service of ending this pandemic, supports the waiver of those protections for Covid-19 vaccines. We will actively participate in text-based negotiations at the WTO needed to make that happen.”

Your quote ended one sentence too soon, no one is making off patent vaccine any time soon

To anyone except a politician they would read the poster as complete by the end of May for Group 2. My wife, a health worker dealing daily with vulnerable people can't even get a guesstimate of a likely appointment date. Wairarapa DHB. Although the local pharmacy staff are in the process with first vaccinations done.

Honestly seems like a lottery 🤔

And now we have multiple stories today pointing out all the front line staff working at the border (airline, airport retail etc) are not vaccinated and that the "frontline border workers must be vaccinated" order only covers those employed by the government.

There are 50,000 people in the "border and MIQ workers" category according to the MoH yet we know from the numbers flying around that around 15,000 seem to be directly employed at the border or MIQ. The real question is how many of those 50,000 from group 1 have actually been vaccinated, and right now nobody seems to know that.

Sure.  The EU isn't very happy about it.

However if the US wasn't behind it then there'd be no chance at all.

Producing mRNA vaccines seems to be very challenging.  There was a $50 million investment project in Aus to investigate making them there, apparently it's been abandoned - not commercially viable.

Canada has taken a different approach to vaccination, prioritising getting first dose to as many people as possible (this for example with Pfizer vaccine gives ~ 85% protection) and following up with the second dose "when available" - up to 4 months lag between doses.  Off-label, but seems to be evidence that a longer gap between doses may provide eventual increased immunity vs the normal gap between doses.  They've got a different requirement than NZ as they've got high levels of CT / ~9,000 new confirmed cases / day, but slowly reducing.

I had my first Pfizer jab yesterday and have just received a booking for my second jab by text message, for the 11th (5 days later).

So much for the 2 weeks period in between jabs.

What is the acceptable timeframe between the first and second doses of the Comirnaty vaccine?

To be fully immunised with Comirnaty requires two doses given at least 21 days apart. Vaccinators are advised not to give the second dose earlier than this, and while longer spacing is acceptable, the ideal spacing is for the second dose to be given as close after 21 days as possible.

and that is from the Immunisation Advisory Centre.
