antonknee: Interested in the Bidfood offer - in particular as I really like their hot cross buns which I think are far superior to the supermarket ones or Bakers Delight ones. Hard to spend $200 on HCBs though...

Went for a run last night - 6km loop, so hopefully within the definition of ‘local’. Saw quite a few people out and about too, probably more than expected. NZ will have some very, very fit dogs in a few weeks time.

Also some people need to be a bit better about sharing the footpaths and getting out of each other’s way to maintain some distance. I’ve taken to running in the road shoulder in places to achieve this.

I might have had to buy a wagyu brisket to break the $200 barrier.............

or was that the first thing in the cart ;)

The things you gotta do and the sacrifices you gotta make to make it through lockdown eh...

Did my weekly supermarket shop and managed to  get one of the last bags of flour (only 4 left on the shelf) and that was a 5 kg bag. Checkout lady said they go as soon as they come in.

With all due respect, there's too many 'paranoid' but physically able shoppers using online shopping and, as a consequence, making it difficult for the elderly and medically vulnerable to get their deliveries.

Yes this. My other half is immuno-compromised and we are both in the older age group, although not hit 70. Have yet to find a delivery slot for either the local New World, or Countdown. I went and did a physical shop this morning.

Bidfood no use to us - they do not appear to make it over the hill to the Wairarapa.

Interesting. I have often seen their delivery trucks around the Wairarapa, servicing commercial kitchens. Strange that they can't do it for domestic - you'd think it would be a no-brainer to keep the company ticking over.

Yes, I thought the very same thing. I have seen them in the Square in Martinborough delivering to the hotel etc.

Notes from my shop.

Worked out ok , though everyone seemed a bit edgy.

All over 65s had to do was identify themselves and they got to front of queue.

As an under 65 I was Ok with that.

While biggest crowds were in morning , its easier to stand out with no shade than later in day.

Facial Recognition
New World pep talk noted mask wearers must drop the mask so the Facial Recognition system can capture you.
Ok this has been happening for ages , but note they had to highlight it.

Prices.

A bit higher here a bit there so it all added up.

I don't accept the specials excuse that duopoly uses.
With Vegie & Fruit shops ( 30% or so of that market ) , and butchers out of the picture.
Baseline sales volume up anyway.
So they don't negotiate a better price for the much higher sales volume.

Yeh right.

One would expect a fair price would end up somewhere between the rotating special and normal price.

Noting the Briscoes effect where the Normal price is a bit of a made up construct.

They went after the wrong industry with the Petrol price review.
A review of Supermarket competition would, the secret supply contracts would have revealed more value to taxpayer.

All the best for your shop... Pete.

Went for a long bike ride this afternoon. It was sunny and very little Wellington traffic except for buses with no passengers.

It was great to have a good work out because sitting around the house, although one of my favourite hobbies, isn't good for you.

The best thing was, I'm not the health minister so it doesn't matter who sees me : -)

The "door man" insisted that I use the trolley even though I said I do need it for my 2 items. She sprayed and wiped the trolley handle before my use.

I think it may have been @tinkerisk who mentioned this a lot earlier. Say the shop works out they can have 50 people inside at one time safely. 50 trolleys are available - no trolley, no entry. Really simple way of keeping control of how many people are inside at one time.

That may not be the case here, but it would make sense.

i asked about this but they said they enforced this rule because it was easier to keep your distance if you had a trolley in front of you

Common sense is not as common as you think.

My parents who are over 70 have contacted me to tell me that their supermarket , Fresh Choice, (they live in a small town so only has one) has no delivery times available at all in their online system. They have tried phoning Fresh Choice throughout the day but  noone is answering. They have checked the website throughout the day, but no slots have become available, it just says no times available in the future. They want me to check in the early morning, say 1am or 2am, to see if slots come available.

They got a delivery at the beginning of the week, but it was missing a lot of things including eggs. They were also rationed other things like milk so didn't all that they ordered. So they have run out of things early. IMO this isn't good enough that they can't contact them, and their delivery system seems to be totally full, or has a problem. They are at risk due to their age and some health issues. So are all the supermarkets coping? I don't think so.

@mattwnz suggest you have a read of this thread https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=161&topicid=268557

A GZ poster in that thread is in a similar position to your parents. There's a number of suggestions and services available, some are specific to certain chains but haven't seen Fresh Choice mentioned.

There's a couple of nationwide organisations that are specifically helping with delivery for similar situations.

Its one thing to flout the rules that have been put in place for us all to adhere to, its quite another to publicly advertise that you are flouting the rules.

I dont blame the supermarkets. Online was a low use niche product. Then it was hit hard. The issue I have is didn't the PM ban over 70's from going? What if the family are not nearby, how can people cross town for them if its stay local? I think my mate said that many slots are taken by priority customers, how can over 70's get that out in place if they can't contact the supermarket? If I was over 70, Id say bugger it and go myself, and argue at the door (if over 70's were banned, or heavily discouraged)

I don't necessarily blame the supermarkets but they are behind the times and slow to adapt. Online delivery is a low use niche product because the experience is average and delivery is super expensive. I would guess that the supermarkets will only do what is in their interests and expanding their online presence isn't. I recall reading a few years ago that NZ is very well served by supermarkets, i.e the number of supermarkets we have for our population is very high, therefore most people don't need to travel far to get to one. Can't find any sources for this though..

Local supermarket has a txt service for when you visit. you text the number and it puts you into the virtual queue. you can just sit in the car and relax until they txt you that its your turn. you then have 10 minutes to proceed to the entrance and show the staff the message before you are allowed in

its a pretty good idea, and saves the long queues outside and the need to try and keep the 2m distance while waiting.

would be nice if they told you where in the queue you were, ie 10th or 15th etc so you could estimate how long the wait will be.
