Fred99:

Unless he consented to be named, that's a spectacular breach of privacy by the AFR naming the man, when AFAICT he did nothing wrong.

I hope he sues.

Getting a bit OT, but I don't think the AFR or Herald has done anything illegal (although perhaps immoral or unethical). AFAIK, there's no suppression order on the information, either here or in Australia. In which case, the test is whether it is defamatory and/or known to be untrue. IANAL.

There's apparently an exemption in the NSW Health Records and Information Privacy Act allowing media to breach privacy if it's in relation to their "news activities".

NSW Health Minister and the head of Health NSW have lambasted the AFR.

It seems to be that a law change is needed.

It's not really off topic, it's critical that this does not happen here or again with our "bubble partner".

If angry mobs with pitchforks surround their home, and their social media accounts start getting trolled, I would think they might have a good case for damages regardless of what the law says.

Glad to be a source of amusement for you, but don't underestimate the human capacity for stupid behaviour. Even in Australia. Maybe especially in Australia.

How do you plan on getting legal damages outside the law? The (lack of) circular logic is highly amusing.

What's truly interesting today is the information released under parliamentary questioning to Chris Bishop about the Valentine's Day cluster.

The fact the MoH now say the Papatoetoe High student was the initial source and not the mother working in the airline laundry is quite significant, and the fact the MoH now think the most leading hypothesis was 7 weeks of undetected spread back to the genomic link which was a MIQ case in December is quite extraordinary.

If this is the case it really does show that while we know a lot about Covid, that there is a huge amount we don't know..

I don't know if Oz has similar laws but in US civil law depriving someone of their liberties is a pretty all-encompassing way to get restitution if other methods fail or aren't applicable.

Kidnapping is an interesting litigation technique.

That's not shouting - that's defamation as it's untrue (hopefully).

Regarding the discussion around vaccination of overstayers some pages back.

The government has moved away from the prior indicated "No questions asked" approach.

Health services must now record people's details, but a Chinese wall will protect this information from immigration officials:

newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2021/05/coronavirus-visa-overstayers-won-t-be-reported-to-immigration-officials-when-getting-covid-19-vaccine-kris-faafoi.html

Probably this was inevitable. Having fully anonymous vaccinations would lead to all sorts of issue's. From difficulty tracking statistic's, to not being able to follow up on the 2nd does, to people deciding that 3 month booster's would be a good idea and eating into our supply.

Northland opening vaccinations to over 50's ahead of the rest of the country, with walk in's, and without online bookings etc went bad as predicted by many on here.

They got overwhelmed with demand. Got lots of media coverage that they were turning away people out of region. Unclear if they were verifying addresses, or just turning away those that volunteered that they primarily live in another region.

They have now ditched walk in's, and are spinning up a lot more call center capacity. Hopefully this will lead to a better vaccine experience (even if some people are given an appointment in several weeks time)

Also covered in the above link is that some the entire of 16+ age Reefton will be offered the vaccine, in order to avoid the need for many clinics to be run as each tranche become eligible. I imagine other regions will take this approch to remote area's too. I get the impression this is being well managed.

It has come to the media's attention that a lot of border workers (i.e. contractors on ports, airline ground staff) are not covered in the border worker vaccination order, and a decent chunk are yet to be vaccinated:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/125039559/more-than-a-quarter-of-air-new-zealand-frontline-staff-have-not-had-a-single-covid19-jab

Hopefully this can be sorted in short order. Vaccinating all staff at border facilities, incl those potentially in contact with travelers (i.e. MIQ transfer drivers) is is the single biggest and easiest thing we can do to reduce the odds of transmission into our community.

Interesting. Would mean a chain of transmission 3 - 8 people long, each of whom all transmission other than a single one resulted in the cluster burning out. Until it hit the school that is...

Guess we will never know if this hypothesis was true.

Another nasty reality check, from the USA ...

The Washington Post - Hundreds of bodies of covid-19 victims are still in New York’s refrigerated trucks more than a year into the pandemic

today

As New York emerged as the center of the coronavirus pandemic last spring, the overwhelmed city began storing the bodies of victims in refrigerated trucks along the Brooklyn waterfront.

More than a year later, hundreds remain in the makeshift morgues on the 39th Street Pier in Sunset Park.

In a report to a city council health committee last week, officials with the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner acknowledged that the remains of about 750 covid-19 victims are still being stored inside the trucks ...

Dina Maniotis, executive deputy commissioner with the medical examiner’s office, said most of the bodies could end up on Hart Island, off the Bronx, where the has city buried its poor and unclaimed for more than a century. ...

The virus is moving its own goal posts all the time and us humans will always play catchup. Hence this very interesting and informative article posted on the 8th May here:

sbiddle:

A brilliant (but long) read about aerosol vs droplet transmission and why it took us so long to accept what was happening

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/07/opinion/coronavirus-airborne-transmission.html?smid=tw-share

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
