Risks of lockdowns seem to always cause toilet paper shortages in NZ and Oz.

I've not observed that during all of Auckland's Level 4 lockdowns. Every time I went to my local Countdown under Level 4 I was able to get everything I needed with no supply shortage of our essentials--even toilet paper. There were indeed shortages of certain items from time to time, but Countdown were pretty good at rationing these items so usually at worst there were only a few on the shelves. Sometimes it was a case of certain variations of the same product family that were facing shortages -- e.g. I recall an occasion where Countdown had no 2-pack paper towels for sale but still had plenty of single or >2 packs paper towels. Ended up just buying the 4-pack instead of the 2-pack I wanted, which was no big deal. Usually wasn't too long before supply was back to normal levels.

I suspect the toilet paper shortage was either unique to Oz or the media blowing things out of proportions.

Interestingly enough i found out from a friend who is a nurse that bugger all of her co-workers have been vaccinated.

The DHB nurses have but not the nurses from the rental bureaus, she has been asking her management when they will be done but very little communication back.

Bureau nurses are front line staff.

Early on there was a temporary hand sanitiser supply issue some places in NZ.There was definitely some silly bulk buying going on. Toilet paper I noticed some people at the supermarket filling trolleys with it now and then. Like most people I know I stuck to buying normal quantities and had zero issues.

Level 4 lockdowns?  Plural?  There was only ever one L4 lockdown in NZ, that from 11:59pm(?) 25 March to 11:59 pm 27 April 2020 (https://covid19.govt.nz/alert-levels-and-updates/history-of-the-covid-19-alert-system/).

And plenty of empty space in the toilet roll shelves in local supermarkets in our part of Auckland.  Can't recall if they every fully ran out.  Probably not.  It did not affect us that much as being (slightly) rural we usually have a couple of large packs on hand in normal times.

It was not just AU, nor even just an AU & NZ thing.  Runs on toilet paper (and other essentials) occurred in many areas; see https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/coronavirus-toilet-paper-shortage-panic/2020/04/07/1fd30e92-75b5-11ea-87da-77a8136c1a6d_story.html

Update on the Israeli new daily cases vs Vaccinations plot.

Clear substantial impact of 77% (20 - 29 year olds) to ~97% (70+) of the population having had at least one dose of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine (71% to ~94% respectively fully vaccinated).

==

Interesting the small blip in downward trend following the Israeli-Palestinian conflict earlier in the month.

The tragedy of situation aside, looking at the scenes on TV at the time I did wonder what effect it was going to have on their case rates.  In the end, comparatively little.

Now approaching single digit numbers of new cases per day (~1/million people), so data may become contaminated by imported cases. Unfortunately, though the Israeli government provide extensive information, the data on new cases is not split by imported vs local.

And in contrast, a significant uptick in new cases in the UK despite their relatively levels (~58%) of vaccination (mostly AZ?).  Only 37% have had their second dose though.

A few people now not wearing masks on Kapiti line into Wellington. With zero enforcement, what can we expect? I'd support simply turfin' them off at the next station, no need to chase up fines. A few days of this should fix the issue.

From: https://www.news.com.au/world/coronavirus/global/peru-now-the-worstaffected-nation-by-covid-per-capita-after-death-toll-triples/news-story/e9128ca3465120768f4bda21d5d9a8f2

Peru has more than doubled its official coronavirus death toll, raising it from 69,000 to more than 180,000, the government said overnight.

The toll was adjusted from 69,342 to 180,764 on the advice of a panel of Peruvian and international experts, Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez told reporters in Lima.

The shocking increase means the Latin American nation of 32.6 million people is now the has the worst death rate per capita in the world.

Herald had the usual Watch Live! Although it isn't... banner and heading article for the numbers to be released by MoH in written 1PM statement. Only to pull it soon after for some reason. Now missing from their main page totally

A Marae up north is being commandeered for a year for a mass vac centre. And a pacifica and Maori one is opening here in Canterbury. Obviously like the large drop in centre format.

And we're below the 500K scan mark.

/edit looks like China throwing stones become more interesting

Peru added to the death count those that did not have a covid test, topping the charts now

That's a really badly written article that doesn't really lay it out very well..

Here's a better one
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-57307861

Basically they used excess deaths compared to previous years,

Peru was always suspected of having much higher mortality,  and ultimately once we globally get out the other side of COVID places that have had huge outbreaks but have generally poor medical and testing infrastructure (India/Brazil etc) will all eventually  revise up their death tolls.... without effective testing Its hard to count those who die of COVID, but most countries count overall deaths pretty well..

So:

The UK variant is Alpha,

the South African Beta,

and the Indian as Delta (but that's only B1617.2, not B1617.1 or B1617.3

Vietnam is reporting a "hybrid" variant of B1617.2 with the UK variant (I forget what it's called - apologies), maybe that should be called Alpha Delta.

Actually, rather than pretend that people are going to comprehend this craziness to avoid "stigma", they should put effort into educating people why there shouldn't be stigma.
