Handle9:

neb: That's the J&J, the least effective of the vaccines?

And still had 100% efficacy against hospitalization and deaths in their clinical trials.

All the western approved vaccines are extremely effective against serious harm.

Exactly - and while the efficacy levels weren't as great as some others such as Pfizer and AZ after two doses, they delivered better protection after a single dose. At the start of the year they started trials of a two dose "booster" of the Ja&J/Janssen vaccine that does seem to be delivering pretty good results.

In many poorer countries a single dose vaccine that has pretty basic storage requirements and offers pretty good protection has plenty of potential.

There will be a number of people here receiving this jab who would currently be deemed too high risk for the Pfizer.

Some interesting reading out of Sydney where some trials of a modified BCG vaccine has delivered good results in mice https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.12.10.419044v2

There has been a lot of talk about BCG in the last year, particularly research out of Japan that loosely linked BCG usage to lower levels of Covid in some areas. While there is no real hard evidence yet there are certainly people who do believe that there could well be a link between long term BCG use and some protection against Covid infection and spread.

NZ is one such place along with other countries such as Taiwan and Thailand that have had high BCG vaccination usage for many decades.

Vaccination available from mid-next week at our local medical centre (Hibiscus Coast, Auckland).  Much closer and more convenient than the nearest community vaccine centre, which is ~37km away.  Wife & I just booked for next Wed via the Health365 website.  Very simple booking process.

So you have more details on this? Mother Neb was told there would be one set up in Albany at some point, but HBC would be even better.

I hope people can find it within themselves to be patient getting the jabs. Admittedly I've already had both and each time was a 30 minute in and out. I know I would far rather have the 30 minute experience (maybe a month later) after they call me to book an appointment, than jockey for position (pick me pick me), lots of lengthy failed phone calls and end up with a 2 hour ordeal (x2) in the middle of a similarly impatient throng.

It would be easier to be patient if there was consistent information and treatment around the country. I was able to get my first jab and an appointment for the second without problem, but only because someone directed me to an unpublicised neighbourhood site that was accepting walk-ins. This while the official MOH site keeps telling me to be patient and they will contact me at an unspecified time in the unknown future for a possible appointment and DO NOT under any circumstances just show up as I will NOT be vaccinated if I do. Who needs this kind of crap?

People are being patient. The messages in most areas are clear. Wait to be called. Or book here. So the current covered groups are in 'pick me pick me' status. But the picking isn't seemingly happening as efficiently. Or we wouldn't have 2000? Border staff still pending.
There is proof in previous pages that there are centres taking walk ins. Or who they can get if quiet. And that issue shouldn't exist. I expect right now there should be a small wait if bookings vs stock was equal and walk is turned away.

While we hear of very few people getting the call up and more 'I got lucky'. Sounds like some private groups are going to centres, while rest under booked and over resourced.

There will be a sweet spot equation based on num of seats for the 20min stand down, vs prep time, vs processing, vs jab time. If that was nailed. The place would be busy from opening to close.

Obviously they're still meeting targets, but it's more likely rural settlements working more efficiently than the centres with bookings

I just detect a bit of anxiety here (so it will be Nation wide) over the whole vaccination thing and I think they are distressing themselves needlessly. Don't worry about the quirks that may be happening. Very few things are perfect.

How timely

Based on data, the Auckland region is running behind rollout schedule, but the region has delivered over a third of the entire country's doses.

No DHBs had stopped their rollouts due to low supplies, Bloomfield said. They were working with the Ministry to ensure they could continue to vaccinate as per their schedules.

The rollout could slow down, and some centres may have to pause, but they were balancing their rollout based on supply, Bloomfield said.

For group 1, 54,000 had first dose and 48,000 second dose.

In group 2, 332,000 had first dose and 230,000 second. In group 3, 145,000 had first does and 34,000 second and in group 4 35,000 had first dose and 4500 second.

Another week of chugging alone at around 100K doses administered...

I guess we have two or three more of these until mid July when we will be able to jump to pretty much as much as we can jab,

At a max of about 50K doses a day we are still only looking at ~350K doses per week, and I'm guessing that the delivery in July will be something like ~100K per week for W1+2 then 3-400K a week for W3+4) August deliveries will be even more again,

But all this secret squirrel about what we are getting and when is bugging me a bit,  If you stroll over to Canada, the govt has laid out its expected weekly deliveries until the End of July...

Seems a bit of pot luck involved - depends on which medical centre you are with.

Ours (Orewa Medical Centre) is starting vaccinations next week (got my days mixed before, mine is actually Tue but I see they have now put up appointment slots for Monday, of which 28 are currently still available).  If in Group 3, simply go to the Health365 website, click on Appointments and from the dropdown select 'Dr Covid Vaccination'.  Then pick a time to suit.  Your free choice about date and timing from the available slots (currently only Mon slots showing though).  Alternatively, go into the clinic and book, or phone (? not checked if they will by phone, though I see no reason why not).  May be more options available if go in or phone.  Will only vaccinate their own patients though so no point in going there if not already with them.

But  ... my elderly MIL goes to a different local medical centre in Orewa.  They told her they are not, and will not be doing Covid vaccinations.  Her only current option appears to be to go a community clinic.  The nearest, Birkenhead is ~35km away for her, which is well outside her driving range.  Not clear why that medical centre is not doing them.  They are also not tied in with the Health365 service.  Possibly not unrelated?

Even in the case of our clinic, we were not advised.  We only knew about it because my wife was checking their website, where there was notice advising that they would be starting G3 vaccinations next week, and to book via the Health365 website.

Ironically, shortly before finishing typing the above, an email and txt came in from the Northern Region Health Coordination Centre Vaccination Team inviting me to receive the Covid vaccine.  Contains a link to make a booking.  MIL received a similar invite several days ago but following the link, the only option for her was the Birkenhead community clinic.

Certainly not making it easy for the elderly and less mobile, who are likely the most in need of being vaccinated.

Five more local cases in Melbourne, all linked to previous cases but includes a nurse who had been vaccinated (had been caring for residents transferred to the hospital from the Arcare Maidstone aged care facility).

Seems NSW and QLD may have dodged the bullet.  Now 1 - 2 weeks since the infectious couple past through NSW and into QLD.  So far no resulting local cases in either state.

Sod's law, but news just coming through that they've found a so far unlinked CT case in Bondi NSW.

Indeed!  And with a long list of "venues of concern".
