Visits a chemist the morning after arrival. Any chance it was to get some cold and flu medicine?

I can imagine that chemist is going to be inundated with reporters asking what he bought! If it was cold and flu, holy cow the brown stuff will hit the whirring thing..

Since they use GZ as one of their reliable sources*, they are probably are heading there (with masks on and a boom mike) right now.

Wellington lockdown being considered.

Talk about scaremongering and spreading FUD..

Yeah, All the media were doing it this morning, and it was all off Bloomfield correctly saying that we are considering all our options....

Hipkins tried to Hose it down later in the morning with a "no lockdown proposed just yet."

but it was like pi$$ing into a Tornado....

How many flights were departing from Wellington to other places when they were at the airport?

Couldn't agree more.  And it's about time this wishy-washy, hugs-and-smiles, government grew a pair and started educating and informing the public that Covid is here to stay and will likely cause tens or hundreds of deaths each year. Just like a multitude of other causes, some infectious diseases, that we have to live with.

Between now and the time we have sufficient vaccine rollout, it could cause many thousands of avoidable deaths in NZ.

They have been warning that the pandemic isn't going to be suddenly "over" - that there will be long-term impacts on travel and need for ongoing contagion control.

Nobody knows how that's going to roll out, so expecting govt/authorities to be committing to details of exactly how it's going to be 12 months from now isn't reasonable.  Every time an official/expert makes a comment based on their expectations, there are howls of protest, by people who want everything back to the old normal immediately, or by people who want a more cautious strategy.

They should change the times the International flights come in so there is a few hours between flights where they can disinfect. As they stand now, all the international flights come in about 10 minutes apart and therefore you get them mingling in customs and baggage. Then in the waiting area friends and relatives are waiting for one of those flights, so if the infected Qantas people came in and they stopped to hug and talk with family, the people waiting for the next flight are in close proximity. Why haven’t they also made the airport a place of interest in this case.

Luckily this time I didn’t go in to greet my arrivals because it was pouring rain.

This could all have been avoided if our non government thought and acted faster. The NSW bubble or better still the Australian bubble closed when the Victoria breakout started. I was at Te Papa on Sunday but we decided to flag the art exhibition due to the long queues.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Delta variant:
"Headaches, sore throat, and a runny nose are the most common symptoms"
IIRC Bloomfield was on National Radio this morning talking about "loss of smell / taste" being indicative of C19. While it probably still is, the symptoms of the Delta variant do seem to different, and far more likely to be dismissed as a cold - and at the time when the person is probably most infectious.

Just have to wait and see how the testing pans out, I guess.

But if it has circulated around Wellington airport in any meaningful way then there must be a decent chance of it being in Auckland too.

Going to be a lot of blaming going on right now. Some of it warranted, others not so much. This I believe is fair criticism.

Allowing totally unfettered travel between a city with a known incredibly virulent variant and uncontrolled community outbreak for several days has cost us dearly.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-science-suggests-a-wuhan-lab-leak-11622995184

Googling for Dr Steven Quay finds a lot of self-promotion. He's a PhD chemist by training and CEO of a biomedical company. Reading a bit finds some dubious stuff (e.g. promoting hydrochloroquine as a treatment). And eventually this:

Fact-checked by: Ellinika Hoaxes

2021/02/03 | Greece

FALSE: Through his research paper, Dr Steven Quay, proved that the there is a 99.8% chance that SARS-CoV-2 was actually a virus that escaped from a lab.

Explanation: The document which is presented as Dr Quay's research is not a scientific study, but rather a self published report with random information and photos. There is no explanation as to what protocol was used to source the data or the research methodology that the author used to reach his conclusions. Moreover this report has not passed the peer-review process, meaning that the data and the conclusions have not been examined by anyone.

In the case of the arrival time, none.

In the case of the departure time it would have been pretty minimal.

I still don't understand why mask wearing here is only mandatory on the flight and not in the airport. It's always stood out as an inconsistency - but when we know the MoH have only been enforcing PT and plane mask wearing for non health reasons (so people are familiar with wearing masks in case they are needed) it's hardly surprising.
