Went for a long bike ride this afternoon. It was sunny and very little Wellington traffic except for buses with no passengers.

It was great to have a good work out because sitting around the house, although one of my favourite hobbies, isn't good for you.

The best thing was, I'm not the health minister so it doesn't matter who sees me : -)

Its one thing to flout the rules that have been put in place for us all to adhere to, its quite another to publicly advertise that you are flouting the rules.

Except no rules are being flouted. Is it wise? Maybe, maybe not. Both physical and metal health and physical is one of the most important things people can focus on right now, and exercise plays a very important part of that.

To suggest going for a "long" bike ride is flouting rules however is simply not correct.

Police guidelines are very clear.

you are of the assumption it was in the local area, the other person is of the assumption its not the local area. you are both assuming.

but police have been out actively advising cyclists about remaining local as there seems to be an awful lot out there going for their rides many km from where they live, claiming they are just exercising IAW the government, but failing the remember the keep local part of all that.

I don't necessarily blame the supermarkets but they are behind the times and slow to adapt. Online delivery is a low use niche product because the experience is average and delivery is super expensive. I would guess that the supermarkets will only do what is in their interests and expanding their online presence isn't. I recall reading a few years ago that NZ is very well served by supermarkets, i.e the number of supermarkets we have for our population is very high, therefore most people don't need to travel far to get to one. Can't find any sources for this though..

Slow to adapt to what? The growth of online in recent years has been massive, and the scale at which both chains have managed to ramp up online in the past two weeks is quite remarkable.

There are however limitations as to how far that can be ramped up - you can't for example have significant larger numbers of people picking orders during the day because this reduces store capacity for customers maintaining distancing.

Let's look at the office Police guidelines.

JOGGER SCENARIO

In this scenario, police encounter a person or group who drove to go for a run, cycle or surf.

"There is no enforcement power available as long as they are maintaining physical distancing from each other," the document says.

"People engaging in a leisure or fitness activity within a reasonable distance of their home whilst maintaining appropriate physical distancing is reasonable in the circumstances."

NW Wigram this morning:

Front of queue, about 15 waiting for opening. (30 minutes earlier than last Saturday)

X marks for queue spacing on entry.

Only items not in stock that I normally buy were sour cream and high grade flour for bread making. (Which I do regularly - even pre-earthquakes!)

Checkout lanes beside each other now have a wall between them.

You have an X to stand on and unload your groceries onto the conveyor...from the end!

Groceries packed into another sanitised trolley. You can move off the X to pay once the packer has gone!

All staff wearing masks, gloves, apron etc.

No queue waiting as I was leaving.

Different to last week in a good way. (Everyone is learning and evolving)

Less than half of the customers were wearing masks. More with gloves.

cool, police and the government has also said stay local, and have actively been warning cyclists going for long rides away from their local area.

that's the advice from both of those organizations

"Stay local if you go out for exercise and stay close to home."

You're right - I brought that album when it first came out. I'm focussing on it right now!

Yepp. There's plenty of hills to ride up where I live so I can do a good hour without leaving my suburb or the one next to it.

Bearing the rules in mind, the health minister was on the end of a beat up. But as they say in politics, perception is everything.

My wife went to NW in Otaki at 9am this morning to find it pretty much out of all the basics, flour, sugar, baking powder, pasta, wine :) etc and the dairy aisle was closed for re-stocking.

The checkout person told her people were coming from Levin (25 mins away), Waikanae (20 mins) and Paraparaumu (30 mins) to shop because they didn't want to wait in the queues at their own supermarkets so we miss out.

We live at the southern end of the beach with only about 80 houses around us. We've walked the beach and local tracks every day for years and know our neighbours pretty well. But we've never seen so many people out walking and cycling.

Even at the height of summer, when all the bach's are filled with Wellingtonian's, we might only seen half a dozen people on our end of the beach at the most. Yesterday there were dozens. Five or six 4WD's on the beach with people fishing, motorbikes screaming up and down, people and dogs everywhere.

I've no doubt this wont be the only lockdown and we will only have ourselves to blame.

[e] reword the last line to make sense.

I dont blame the supermarkets. Online was a low use niche product. Then it was hit hard. The issue I have is didn't the PM ban over 70's from going? What if the family are not nearby, how can people cross town for them if its stay local? I think my mate said that many slots are taken by priority customers, how can over 70's get that out in place if they can't contact the supermarket? If I was over 70, Id say bugger it and go myself, and argue at the door (if over 70's were banned, or heavily discouraged)

My parents who are over 70 are still making occasional trips to the supermarket, because all of their neighbours are in the same age bracket and it's too much hassle to try to find someone else who can do it for them.

Frankly I don't blame them. With all the precautions that are being taken I consider the risk to be pretty low, so I would do the same in their position.

TBH I don't think extra lockdown time is going to make a blind bit of difference to the attitude that it's just an extended holiday.

That aside, especially as it's off topic, I am wondering what 'exit strategy' supermarkets have for when lockdown is finally lifted. Will they continue with controlled entry for a short, or long, time or will they dispense with it tout de suite?

It likely will if the defense force gets called into to help the police with things like this.

but it should never come to this, people just need to suck it up for a month or so then we should be alright

Unfortunately, there are plenty of people who think "that doesn't apply to me or what I'm doing though".

It doesn't help when the reporters at the 1300 press conference don't listen or pay attention to what has been said, or what has been asked previously. "There are reports of people surfing, what do you think of that?" Dr Bloomfield patiently replies they shouldn't be, it's been discussed previously this week, and it's in the document. " What about kayaking?" Seriously? Full kudos to Dr Bloomfield, I would have not hesitated in suggesting where that reporter could go, and best he not come back.

The only way to make sure it gets through some thick skulls is by example. Trouble is, each day at the 1300, we hear how the majority are doing a good job. Those that aren't doing a good job, aren't seeing examples being made of those who aren't, so carry on with their behaviour because "I'm ok, no one has told me I can't do this"

And those "people" who are not obeying the rules, if they get the coronavirus, will be the first to jump up and down and demand immediate medical assistance, ahead of everyone else.
Some people are just really stupid - reminds me a little of Trump's logic, which is probably "if it doesn't affect me I don't really care about it".
