Netherlands has 40% completely unvaccinated to feed a Covid wave.
Partly vaccinated at least won't suffer worst effects and spread less mostly.
No surprise, no vaccination failure, by what can be expected.

Older people were prioritized for vaccination and essential workers making up most of the numbers.
Unvaccinated proportion is much higher in young, mobile, clubbing, social group.
In the places where I have seen reports of of cases, its pretty much these unvaccinated driving things, younger than previous waves.

Understandably they are the most impatient, at the time of their lives when people are out socializing, travelling, finding partners etc.
So once the older were protected, and restrictions relaxed a bit, they moved rapidly to 'its all over' mode.

Sydney reports seem to be also saying they are seeing younger people, and reporting a lack of co-operation typical of young people.
They have also been consuming messages that play down the risks for younger people for a year or more.

Answer is the same.
We need to get a large proportion of 'all' groups fully vaccinated, plus a few weeks for the second shot to be effective.
Ok protect older groups first as they are vulnerable to the worst effects and filling hospitals, essential workers and such.

Job is not done until mid age, and younger groups also have 'high proportion' of full vaccination.

Batman:

Dratsab: Meanwhile, in Thailand they're getting close to 10,000 cases per day, with 91 recorded deaths in the past 24 hours. Cases have been on a very steady upwards climb over the last month or so. The Government is refusing to consider any form of lockdown, social distancing is not a thing, masks are not compulsory - the country is running in a business as usual fashion.

they had made it clear from the start they could not afford to lockdown. they don't have social payments. people live on their daily wages. life is short no matter which way you choose.

Rubbish they had varying degrees of lockdown during the initial wave in 2020. This time they've said it'll hurt the economy too much. However, 9pm-4am curfews have now been imposed in the greater Bangkok area starting Monday (their time).

No, they don't have social payments and with a population of around 70 million, and systemic corruption, wouldn't be able to support that level of population over a given period. But they could be mandating face coverings, they could be mandating social distancing, they could be mandating scanning - although with infections starting to run away as they're doing now (a shade over 9500 new reported infections today), that's not really of any use.

Instead they're charging people to have tests. They're charging people to get vaccinated. Hospital care also costs plenty of money over there. This is all stuff the millions of poor cannot afford.

To be fair, the Thai governments in a bit of a hard place with this one. If they lockdown, people complain. If they don't lock down, people complain. So what's happening now is plenty of protest action in the streets over the governments inaction to-date. These protests will be spreading the virus even more due to a lack of distancing and many not wearing masks.

Thai royalty could certainly afford to buy Thailand up the queue for vaccination, and more in this calamity.

Thailand's protesters are targeting the monarchy's wealth, so just how rich is it?

Indonesia is also in very deep trouble.

Cases spiking up exponentially, deaths also spiking up following the increase in cases, now about 1,000 deaths reported per day.

~280 million people, 5.4% vaccinated with Sinovac - which doesn't work very well.

Never once experienced this. As I'm scanning in, the people behind me just bowl on in.

Lemmings spring to mind.

Not helped by poor display of the QR code - ie small A5 size, laminated with glossy plastic, in poor light.

Where the poster is printed on an A4 or A3 sheet of plain paper, mounted flat, in reasonable light, I can scan in without slowing down, phone will pick it up instantly from 3 or 4 metres away while I'm walking - I just need to point it in roughly the right direction.

msukiwi: but if you are seen scanning on your way in the person behind you will get out their phone and scan as well!

Sometimes they even look at me funny as if they are wondering what I am doing!

Victoria will shut its border to NSW. hmm ...

COVID Victoria: Victoria shuts border to all of New South Wales (smh.com.au)

"Victoria will shut its border to all of New South Wales and the ACT from 11.59pm Sunday, but the border bubble will remain in place.

State health officials have grown increasingly concerned about the deepening coronavirus crisis in NSW, which reported the death of a woman in her 90s and 77 new local COVID-19 cases on Sunday."

Even though the NZ alert level is very low, the number of people wearing masks on a daily basis in non-compulsory situations is going up imo. This is a good sign for the future if we need it.

I suspect this is a product of awareness of how vicious the virus spread in other countries has been and the resulting death toll.

In some places there may be a case for telling carriers to hurry up with Android 11 approval for the improved BT for the covid apps.

Phone model makes quite a difference too.

I imagine many posters on a tech forum are using modern smartphones, often upper mid range or flagship.

When I changed from a Samsung S8 to an S10, the difference in performance in scanning QR codes was pretty massive. S8 often took 5+ seconds of moving the phone around trying to get it to lock on. Very frustrating. S10 seems to eat anything up in less than a second. tiny print size, behind glass, uneven lighting etc.

The NZ government really need to incentivize people to get the vaccine. We need to be well over 90% which isn't going to happen unless people are incentivized. eg either a prize draw, a payment or both. I see they are doing this in the US and it seems to be quite successful. The cost for the government to do this is tiny, in comparison to the economic and health advantages of a largely vaccinated population. I did previously suggest on here  cash payments after people had the second vaccine. I think the government has kept money aside that could be used for this, and they have printed a lot of money too with QE that hasn't been allocated, and it is better in peoples pockets and spent in the economy, than being lent to people to push up house prices.

It is interesting in some ways how well the US is now doing, when they initially handled it so badly.

Watching Euro final at Wembley in London crowd looks close to 90,000 packed.

Meanwhile last year's covid party host has won overnight also in London, more tennis grand slams than anyone this year, in fact he won all of them.

There are only 60,000 in Wembley but they did have the problem earlier where security was stormed so it'll probably be a little higher!

The simple fact is many people in the UK no longer care about Covid nor do they fear it. They've been through 16 months of pretty much constant lockdowns and are simply over it.

Tom Cruise is in the crowd sitting next to David Beckham.

Presumably Princes William and Charles are somewhere in the mix as well.
