We will get another outbreak the way our Government are handling this.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/300355450/covid19-nz-more-than-50-transtasman-travellers-caught-without-predeparture-test-in-last-week

Stuff revealed on Friday that despite the Government requiring that all passengers arriving from Australia have a negative Covid-19 test taken in the 72 hours before their flight, New Zealand Customs officials were only checking the test results of about half of those arriving in New Zealand.

Those checks have found more than 50 people arriving in the country without a valid test since last Tuesday.

So we're not checking results, and of those we do check 50 or so were noncompliant....

I am speechless. How is the travel bubble allowed to continued when it's leakier than a sieve.

AGREE

SELFISH SELFISH SELFISH ❗️

Are they not being asked at the departure country of origin border (airline check-in and passport control) for proof of valid negative Covid-19 test and/or valid vaccination ❓

Plus they are sitting in a sealed aluminium can for three hours and I bet not wearing masks 100% of that time.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

The gist I get, asked, maybe. Asked to prove it... maybe not. Only spot checked (think explosive swabbing and body scans they do)

Remember airlines moved to this great idea of self checkin terminals. With a screen that asks you to answer questions and to be honest. And the only interaction you will have is bagdrop to prove your bag in your hand and passport, Avsec bag scan and gate staff unless they're broken and you need to print departure card and see customs staff for visual ID

Then when getting here, only if you have declaration or have been pulled aisde to check.

Far as I know they turned them off for lockdown to ensure possible transference was minimal as it was unknown by that stage. But due to green bubble assumption of no cases have fired them up again.

Random full-on nutter?  Why sure he is, but he believes it 100% - he's very intent on "saving" others and god has given him an audience.

and eventually when the border opens those that are not vaccinated will be exposed to significant risk.....

Its pretty easy to maintain a belief against COVID in NZ when there is no community transmission,

its a whole lot harder to maintain that belief if your friends and relatives are dying around you....

Sort of. Covid doesn't kill that many people who get it and most people recover quite quickly. It's not like there are people keeling over in the street.

We have 1500 cases a day here in a population twice that of NZ. I know one person who has been in ICU and a lot of others who have had Covid and recovered quickly. I don't know anyone who has died. I know of people who have had people in their life die but I don't know anyone directly. The effects in an overall population are hugely significant but the effect on individuals isn't that great.

This feeds into the "it's the same as the flu" mentality if you are already somewhat down the conspiracy rabbit hole.

This is what you'd expect - to shake some sense into people.  It might work for some, but for others they're way too far gone. Logic or being rational about anything is a lost cause.

I would just run a TV/media campaign. many wont be convinced, its up to them to review their stance as things overseas escalate. I certainly don't want my taxpayer dollars used to ask them to get vaccinated. Its on their head as long as adequate efforts have been made to educate them.

I think the current media campaign is fairly well done, Not a direct message to tell people to get vaccinated, just a mix of people and their situation, and how they want the vaccine to protect themselves / others / their way of life (i.e. markets staying open).

Once we get to a point where we have spare vaccine doses & vaccination capacity, I am quite happy for a decent amount of my taxpayer dollars to be spent to actively encouraging / convincing the hesitant to get vaccinated. I would expect it to deliverer extremely good value compared to the hospital care that 1%+ of those people could well need when we open back up to the world. Doesn't need to be super expensive. Perhaps funding vaccine experts to speak at locations with high rates of vaccine hesitancy. Perhaps funding free GP visits for the hesitant to discuss the pro's and cons of the vaccination with their doctor. Perhaps funding GP's to phone their vaccinate patients, to invite them verbally to a vaccination appointment (and have a quick discussion with them about it) where non-verbal communications have failed.

Remember that with vaccine's, people who haven't got around to it yet or didn't know (perhaps mixed up the flu jab and the covid-19 jab) are much bigger in number than anti-vaxers. Those who are hesitant (but with concerns that can be addressed / discussed) also massively outnumber true anti-vaxers (who are so far down the rabbit hole they arn't likely to change their views)

Live: Jacinda Ardern, Chris Hipkins brief media after Cabinet meeting 3:33 pm today

Port and airport workers will soon be required to be vaccinated, as the government expands its border workforce rule.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins announced the move after a Cabinet meeting this afternoon.

Currently, the mandatory vaccination rule applies to workers at managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) facilities, airside government officials and port workers.

They said the expanded order would also apply to:

  • Higher-risk and airside workers at airports
  • Port workers
  • Accommodation providers for isolating air crews
  • Workers handling items removed from ships, aircraft or MIQ
  • Companies routinely providing services to aircraft, ships or MIQ
  • Employees in contact with any of the above

Government-employed workers newly covered by the order will have until 26 August, and private employees until 30 September, to get their first dose.

Oh dear.  Why didn't this happen months ago!

Had discussed this previously that the wider field is massive and should be considered. It now is :)

In a way, it may be planned around the stocks. The heat is off from frontline. Now moving into grp3. And next month 4. It's just a good a time as any to confirm 3rd hands should do for safety

(disclaimer, I was in this boat from the get go, Booked this AM incidentally. But now have a push to make it so)

Have NZ based international air crew (and international sea crew) been picked up in the requirements somewhere?

Weeeellll A release in Feb looked as if they took care of that themselves. 3800 put forward. And subsequent test reigeme.

But, as of May

More than a quarter of Air New Zealand’s frontline staff have not had a single Covid-19 dose and the Government doesn’t know how many other border workers are unvaccinated, months after the top priority group was first offered the vaccine.

Assume many of the ground crew would be now picked up as airside airport workers. The air / Sea crew themselves seem to obvious to have omitted...

Last bullet point catchall is pritty massive. Rubbish company has one driver that picks up the trash at the MIQ, and the entire company needs to be vaccinated if they share a lunchroom or toilet...

Spouse from next week we have 350,000 weekly vaccine doses arriving, so might as well cast the net super wide...

Yeah that's my worry too. It will come also with a testing plan. Hopefully someone sees sense and breaks it down. I don't wanna swab every month if I've not gone there for a while but a peer has instead. 2 weeks post any visits after an extended period? Sure. Happy to.

I"m not sure if this is a few pages back in the thread but why is the govt now paying for MIQ for those who require to return from NSW when they were previously told to travel at your own risk?

How is that fare to those waiting for MIQ slots outside of Australia?

The government needs to move on saliva testing. Despite MOH wanting to move down this track the government is dragging their heels.

I've had to have a couple of tests done for work. I pity those that are having tests done every week or so. I don't blame them for wanting the saliva test.

Couple of things there. There is a vastly under utilized plane (or more if multi carrier) coming back. There was only about 60 spots in MIQ. So only about 60 bookings available on something that seats ~168 - They opened up emergency reserves to accommodate them.

And believe they were only required to pay if it happened that they were airborne, and the border shut in destination. And would need to go straight in their end - as in the risk was if you go and get stuck in one.

Coming home when the deal was off, was (stupidly) it seems always on the cards if it could be accommodated.

/edit actually. It seems someone has changed their mind since the initial agreement in April! https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/flyer-beware-returning-transtasman-bubble-travellers-could-pay-thousands-in-miq-fees/O3GJX2PUZ63QHQSFLDNWYB45FI/

"If there is a resurgence of Covid-19 and quarantine-free travellers to Australia are required to go into MIQ on their return to New Zealand, they will be required to pay for their stay," a MIQ spokeswoman said.

Basically, this is a 'repatriation flight' by another name. As to not upset too many people who have been stuck elsewhere with no options.

Yep, saw that. I don't know why the government (actually read that as us tax payers) are paying. It is unfair on the taxpayers and gives the wrong message, - the government is a soft touch.

It doesn't affect the number of MIQ spaces therefore doesn't waiting times for slots but is unfair when some are paying and some aren't.
