What I bolded, is that MoH is calling this. They are the experts. Jacinda is the mouthpiece. No doubt the Govt, not MoH will consider relationships with other countries, but I would expect that's a secondary call. She implied US and/or Europe will be restricted. Europe you can guarantee.

I agree they are the people to listen to, but it is wrong to assume just because they are making decisions that they are timely and the right ones. Look at the Melbourne GP - pandemic declared, a whole day of on-track action, race not actually cancelled until two hours after the fans were meant to go in and were standing in queues at the gate.

The GP, well its Australia, they dont seem to have a handle on the virus. ScoMo allowed free access to anyone from Italy, until the F1 people got here then he closed it. Thats poor, and thats why Oz isn't doing well. Sport seems alive and well, unlike the rest of the globe.

In my head I think it's fairly safe to visit the US. It's only for a week and won't be going to any supermarkets haha.

You are right, that as a young, female with no pre-existing conditions, your personal risk of travel is low.

Just be aware of the follow:

Travel restrictions that either outright prevent your travel, or void your travel insurance may be announced in the next few day.
Your tourist experience may be compromised by domestic USA covid-19 precautions
You may be required (or more likely kindly asked) to do 2 weeks self isolation on your return.
If a travel restriction to the USA is announced, the a lot of flights coming back may be canceled, and your airline may refund you rather than offering you are replacement. This happened with the china restriction. A lot of people spend big bucks to secure flights out in a hurry.

It sounds like the next round of restrictions will be announced prior to your departure, so you will be able to evaluate these prior to travel.

I agree with him. He seems to accept that we have just 5 cases (now 6) and that this is relatively accurate assessment of NZ's position. And we can have gatherings, of which CBD, being productive are also gatherings.

I dont believe that the time is right to shut everything down. If we shut everything down within NZ when we had one case, and many people and business get adversely affected, many would be angry. As its an overreaction.

Or, we could shut everything down, so that it can't spread as we cannot have people milling around together. Shutting down Pasifika when we all go to crowded CBD, malls, elevators is silly. Its all or its nothing. This ICU doctor seems to feel we can still "be normal" as its not running rife here, but lets shut the borders. Good idea. If in the next week or so we start getting a few cases a day, then shut everything down. Everything, not like Italy, their lockdown is not a lockdown.

Unfortunately true. I spent some time in Texas last year where my wife's uncle took every opportunity to point out how the US did things better than the "socialistic countries such as New Zealand" (his words).

His son asked me how much we paid for my kid's birth here (emergency Caesarian, four day stay in hospital), and I replied "$15 - for the parking". The birth of his kid (vaginal birth, no complications) cost more than $10,000 USD, after their insurance had paid for the bulk of it. Some thoughtful silence occurred after that.

Yeah I get that we pay for it through taxes. But I prefer that to the situation they find themselves in, where many people can't access any healthcare until they're at death's door.

Mortality rate for males is roughly 50% higher than females, but is still low as long as you are young your overall risk remains low.

No need for your to decide now anyway. Better info for your decision will be available by mid next week.

I suspect that, with the PM saying yesterday that there would be more decisions and announcements in the next 48 hrs, that they were waiting for confirmation of that sixth case so that quarantining/isolation of travellers from the US could be announced based on evidence.

See what happens

At least we part own an airline so they can help with this. We still have the chance to stamp it out here but if we aren't at least banning people from countries like UK and the US who's rates are going exponential , it is going to leak in the gates at the airport.

I dont know the nationality of the 6 cases, but it seems they are NZ nationals or have residency. If that's the case and we did close our borders more and earlier, we would still have these cases I feel. They appear to be our own. We could ban, not restrict, but ban non nationals, but I doubt anybody is touristing anywhere globally.

I was earlier critical that we restricted too late and too slow, but its unlikely we had many tourists, if any, and that those that came back are probably nationals and residents anyway. Had we been 40 million population, the stats would have caught up with us, a few leaks, just a few, but they off course would spread.

I took it that is was more to do with US ban of Europe. PM did allude to that. Makes it easier for us to join that, and as the US has now declared a state of emergency, add them as well. Australia is a tricky one. Cuzzy bros and al that

Would it be too much to ask that this courtesy was applied to leaders of other countries as well? I doubt many of his friends refer to the Australian Prime Minister as "ScoMo" and I often see here references to "Humpty Trumpy" as well as someone a few pages back hoping that he caught Covid-19. I understand that they aren't our elected leaders, however we Kiwi's aren't the only ones that frequent the site, and I certainly feel it lowers the tone of the conversation when we take the mickey or wish others ill health.

Seems like international passengers are down 18% YoY at Auckland. Certainly a big hit to numbers, but there will still be a good proportion of foreign tourists in the remaining 82%.

In January 2020, total passenger numbers were down 3.4 per cent on the January 2019 result.

In February 2020, total passenger numbers deteriorated further, falling 8.6 per cent on February 2019.

Initial data for international passengers only for the first 10 days of March has shown an 18 per cent decline compared to the same time a year earlier.

You reckon? re foreign tourists. Many would likely need to 14 day self isolate. Although ti be fair if you come form the US, UK or any country in Europe excluding Italy, you dont need to. Which is bizarre. Id have thought that most international arrivals are Kiwis. If that is not the case its hard to see that we dont have MANY infected here, and regular new cases.

Nor would I.

Presuming a 24 hour turnaround for testing of that case, and the stated 3 days after return before he started to show symptoms, add a day of travel - and he probably acquired the disease at least 5 days ago.

"Officially" 5 days ago there were only 11 cases in New Jersey and a similar number in Houston. If that was true, it would be extraordinarily unlucky to just happen to bump into someone infectious - and get infected.

(Our other "imported" cases were from countries now known to have out of control outbreaks)
