Queensland reporting 9 new cases linked to the cluster and are warning that this outbreak could be the worst they've had in Qld.
With the cases linked and fast lockdown, hopefully they'll be ok.
First case in the cluster was a school student.

the important one, infectious in the community, is dropping down to 26. If that keeps dropping then they are starting to win the battle.

Typical Herald clickbait headline. The Lambda variant is not a 'major concern'. It is just another variant that is being monitored. It may or may not turn out to be worse than Delta in one way or another, but that has not yet been established. These kinds of panicky statements are not helpful.

The article says it has experts worried, and the vaccines may not be as effective against it. It looks like it is along similar lines to Delta which is also more transferable and becoming the dominant  strain. It is always good to know how the virus is tracking ion other countries. I do fear that if NZ got the Delta, we may struggle to eliminate it like they are struggling to do in Oz.

i think humankind will cope. they have had the Euro, Wimbledon, Olympics. we know we're in this for the long haul whatever the strain. possibly the more infectious the strain the faster the pandemic will end?

but yes for some of us, we will leave early unfortunately.

but the world is not ending, and more importantly the rich get richer to pay for their space travel, and Akl house prices will go up

edit - i thnk if you are worried about our hospital capacity yes there should be concern but that's a concern whatever the strain, if and when we decide to open up or if we get proper outbreak

The Lambda strain of Covid  is a major concern. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/covid-19-coronavirus-lambda-variant-may-be-more-dangerous-than-delta/DYS3HGZQQMQOOVYHIB6DSZR5FI/

I doubt it, but who knows?

Delta variant went from about 0.5% of sequenced cases in the US to over 80% in about 12 weeks.

Lambda variant has been in the US for quite a while, sequenced cases peaked in April, then it almost went away - so either it was beaten by more transmissible variants or for some other reason failed to get a foothold.

I'd be cautious of assuming that the tragically high death toll in Peru indicates it's more a dangerous strain than delta.

Quote from the much more credible Washington Post: “It is not anywhere near as concerning as the delta variant,” said S. Wesley Long, medical director of diagnostic microbiology at Houston Methodist Hospital, which on Monday reported its first case of the lambda variant. “That’s the engine that’s going to be driving the surge in the U.S.”

Nextstrain allows you to create a graph based on sequenced cases by emerging lineage over time - by region.

This for South America, where Lambda emerged:

It's being crushed by Delta there now.

This for North America:

But from what I saw on telly, many shops are still open in NSW. It's bonkers how many types of shop are open.

They're making a rod for their own back.

For starters:

  • Stores that will be able to stay open include supermarkets, grocery stores, butchers, bakeries, fruit and vegetable stores, liquor stores, fishmongers, stores that predominantly sell health, medical, maternity and infant supplies, pharmacies, chemists, petrol stations, car hire, banks, financial institutions, hardware, nurseries, agricultural, regional supplies, pet supplies, post offices, newsagents and office supply stores.

Check the list of essential workers - it includes hardware store workers.

Yeah nah, good luck with that, NSW.
