For those who disagree: an anti-vaxxer position is not "an opinion". It's an ideology, akin to extremism now.

It's not the case of "both sides". That side is the bad side, spreading misinformation - even when under the guise of "I am just asking questions."

We do not allow the spread of misinformation or disinformation in this forum. Even if it is just someone "asking questions" that are a exactly copy of stupid remarks spouted by conspiracy theory sources.

You really need to have conversations were you present the facts, correct mistakes and take time to listen to people.

I'm not talking changing the anti-vaxx zealot's mind. I'm happy for him to continue to live in the alternative reality he's fashioned for himself. Eventually that house of cards will collapse by itself. I'm much more concerned about ensuring that the poison isn't spread.

Think of the anti-vaxxer as a virus, and we need to stop him replicating. ;)

It was definitely getting into the 'entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts' territory. This thread has been quite constructive and useful for me keeping up with the pandemic from various sourcess and that's a sideshow the thread doesn't need.

Agree GV, its a serious problem, all the flu comparisons were back in Match 2020.

Unfortunately that's not the case. It's still flying around.

You have your opinion on this and you made it clear. It won't change our stance. Spouting misinformation is not welcome here. Giving a platform to anti-vaxxers, alt-right, racists and other extremists, scammers and com people is not what we are here for.

If anyone disagrees, let me know so I can close your account and you don't have to feel like your imaginary "rights" are being trampled on.

As I posted earlier, I interpreted as personal views that were consistent with many others I know of who are genuinely hesitant about MRNA. Maybe it was an dedicated anti-vaxer and I misread it.

But I also read posts that were attacking and insulting back in return. And they got a free pass, which doesn’t sit well me.

I’ve very much enjoyed the past few years contributing to GZ. I genuinely wish you all the best for the forum going forward. But time to move on. Nothing to do with ‘imaginary rights’, but, yes, please close my account.

At the risk of speaking out of turn - I think removing that poster was the right decision. Even if I disagreed, it’s not my forum anyway

It is one thing to genuinely have a concern or to be hesitant, or to have questions. It is another to assert misinformation and conspiracies and follow it up with fallacies about communist dictatorships (which I feel betrays that it probably wasn’t genuine hesitancy and was in fact bog standard anti vax).

Other posters perhaps could approach the situation more delicately than they did, but to be fair the tolerance level for disinformation and conspiracy needs to be low, and vaccination against COVID 19 is such an important issue I can certainly understand why their frustrations with said disinformation and attitude manifested in that way.

I feel now would be an appropriate time to say that I was a little hesitant to get the COVID 19 vaccine. I was personally somewhat concerned about the newness of mRNA, and that these vaccines have not spent as long in development as they traditionally would have, and also a little fearful of side effects. This is why despite being group 3, and therefore eligible a while back, I have not been vaccinated until last week.

Ultimately, after doing something thinking and research I discovered that the vaccine was safe, and well tested, that the underlying technology has been in the works for a long time. This made me more comfortable. I also considered that on balance, the chances of getting vaccinated being the wrong decision were infinitely small, and the alternative was far worse.

But importantly, I reflected on my own values and also on a statement I myself made earlier in this thread - getting vaccinated (if one can) is simply the right thing to do, for myself and for society at large, and for those who cannot get the vaccine.

Interestingly, I'm quite opposite. As someone who works at a border I was champing at the bit to get mine. By the time it was being rolled out in NZ, quite literally millions of people had already received it and I wasn't seeing anything which gave pause for concern. That said I wasn't using Facebook to read up on developments. mRNA research has been ongoing for a few dacades now, it's not new as anti-vaxxers would try to have people believe, and the studies that have gone along with this have not revealed any long term side effects.

Not having to switch on location services on my phone (thus extending battery life) is an added bonus [/joke]

The moment people start going on debunked conspiracy theories or using the sentence "I thought we lived in a democracy not a communist dictatorship." pretty much indicates the poster is an anti-vaxxer and conspiracy theorist.

I'm in a difficult position. My partner is pretty firmly anti-vaxx, in fact anti a lot of things, until now it hadn't really been an issue. I don't push it, other than ask her questions when she mentions things about vaccines. I prefer not to discuss it even though mainly as I don't know how. I'm very diplomatic, but I will line up for my jab as soon as it's available but I know she won't and will see it as an attempt at control rather than a community effort to suppress a virus.

Sigh. Maybe this should be in the things that annoy me thread.
