Vaxed at last!

I'm in category 3, and live in a Wellington suburb with a large medical centre, very close to my home.

To date I have received one text (June 30) telling me that I am in Group 3 - nothing since, no emails, no letters.

Last week I visited our medical centre to collect a prescription, and was offered an appointment for their first COVID vax clinic, this week.

I got my first shot yesterday - no delay, no adverse effects, just a 20-minute wait for observation, then a short walk home.

A repeat vax appointment was offered after the "normal" interval of 3 weeks - but was easily changed to 6 weeks at my request. (see below)

Yes but they won't read or believe this news unless it happens to them. But then it's too late.

Maybe you and I have a different interpretation of what a "poor person" is. The way I see it, "poor people" don't get on medevac flights anyway, so the situation with MIQ exemption is purely hypothetical. That was my point.

Or, maybe you and I have differing jobs, with mine allowing far more insight as to who gets on medivac flights.

Heh - thanks for that - kind of.

I've currently got my second dose booked just a little over 3 weeks from first dose. For now I think I'll leave it where it is, if it looks like there's no CT in NZ a couple of weeks after first dose, then based on that preprint I might reschedule the second dose later. But if there is CT in NZ by then (3 weeks time) I might leave the appointment where it is (aside from possible difference in protection level offered - if we do get CT locally, then I guess there's going to be a sudden rush of people very keen to make bookings with much more urgency than they've been showing so far).

Maybe that's not even remotely relevant in the case where the parents of the child needing medical treatment have a net worth of $120 billion.

262 new cases in Sydney.

5 new Covid deaths notified. (now 21 total from this outbreak so far)

290 hospitalised, 51 in ICU, 24 on ventilators.

One hundred and ten cases were in isolation throughout their infectious period and 29 were in isolation for part of their infectious period. Forty-three cases were infectious in the community, and the isolation status of 80 cases remains under investigation.

If vaccines were available where they are needed the world would not have a delta at all. I'm not keen to see what an epsilon or gamma looks like.

More manufacturing is needed to beat this clock.

Imo NZ has the expertise and technical base required for vaccine manufacturing. NZ should start doing this for the region and beyond.

Why.....

The production lines at CSL in Melbourne have capacity to produce up to 1 million doses of AZ per WEEK, its currently producing a small fraction of that,,,,

Manufacturing MRNA is a big step for even OZ and they are only at an evaluation stage and still years away from production

Meanwhile Pfizer are cranking out 3-4 billion annually....

Later this year Australia is supposed to be starting clinical trails of an mRNA covid vaccine developed by Monash university. But that's still going to be far short of being able to make them in commercial volumes.

Perhaps we'd be better joining with them rather than going alone. It wouldn't surprise me if facilities to manufacture these vaccines globally gets expanded massively and the bottleneck eases.

I also expect that when the next potential pandemic disease appears, the global reaction to snuff it out might be somewhat more drastic than what happened with Covid. Lots of talk political talk about economic cost of locking down, downplaying potential loss of life, huge mistakes made almost everywhere. No politician wants to admit they goofed and that cost many lives - and then the cost to the global economy has been unprecedented anyway. Next time there'll be huge fear about repeating those mistakes. Maybe I'm being optimistic.
