Fourteen-day self-isolation for anyone entering the country. No more cruise ships inbound until June. Controls on everyone leaving to Pacific Islands - anyone with symptoms or people who visited overseas in last 14 days cannot leave New Zealand to Pacific Islands.

More details with the release later.

@NPCtom Prime Minister said "if you don't have to, don't go overseas"

Again, I wouldn't go.

Self (please stay home, if you'd be so kind) or enforced (you will stay here in this facility for 14 days) I didn't see that detail, and think if it's the former it probably won't help too much?

A friend who has connections with a major multinational just sent me this summary of a Goldman Sachs Investee Call on Friday in the US, where 1500 of their investee companies dialed in. The key points of the predictions in Goldman Sachs’ presentation are:

- Over the next 6-8 weeks we are going to see a global health based and economic collapse.

- 50% of Americans will contract it (150M people)

- 70% of Germany will contract it (58M people)

- Of those impacted 80% will be early stage, 15% mid stage and 5% critical stage.

- Mortality rate of an average of 2% and hence do the math on the lives it will take in the above markets. It’s in millions...

- Europe is pretty screwed and so is the US. Need both of them to effectively control the pandemic (like several Asian countries like Taiwan and Singapore) to ensure that the global economy does not collapse further. However they don’t seem well equipped at all.

- China’s economy will be largely impacted and all exports, imports to and from China will be hit, impacting raw material and the global supply chain.

- Global GDP growth rate will be the lowest in 30 years under 2%

- S&P 500 will see a negative growth rate of -15 to -20%

- Stock markets will collapse only to hopefully recover in the 2nd half of the year

- Social Distancing for the right period of time is the only way to control this and if it’s for too short a period there can be a relapse

Reportedly was “a really really depressing call”.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

I definitely cannot afford to stay in isolation for two weeks. Does anyone have a phone number for Air New Zealand? I can't get through on their 0800 number. I also have flights with United Airlines.

Despite the low level of restrictions to date, it seems to have worked ok here. 10000 have been through it, about 2000 as a running total. Depends if you want to avoid carriers or avoid passing it on.

"will have to isolate themselves for 14 days"

So is this basically the honesty system? Given human nature... a certain percentage will simply not do this... won't they?

The PM did say there would be enforcement through random spot checks

How do you self isolate if you’re visiting and don’t have a house?

Hotels are full of people!

Random spot checks on thousands of people? I don't see how you can do that on this kind of scale.

I was expecting the China & Iran restriction to be expanded to the USA & Europe, and the likes of Aussie ignored.

Fairly happy with this outcome, but the devil will be in the detail. The prime minister mentioned stepping up enforcement, including spot checks, but not other details were disclosed? I don't trust people to self regulate, especially those who are not New Zealanders.

  • Are we going to have harsh penalties for breaching self isolation - In china there is prison time... In Singapore somebody had their residency status canceled and they were deported.
  • Are requirement for self isolation going to be strict (i.e. if you have flatmates will you be required to serve your isolation time in a hotel to protect them).
  • Is enforcement going to be frequent? (i.e. twice daily random temperature checks in china)
  • Is there going to be lots of support for those in isolation(i.e. food deliveries for those who are out of money, or delivery range for commercial services)
  • How are we going to deal with the airport, and transporting those home who cannot drive? - Taxi's, busses & shuttles seem too risky.
  • Is an Australian that turns up for a 7 day stay going to be declined entry.

I am also interested about if this means entry restrictions are going to be relaxed from china and iran. I would oppose this, but it seem's xenophobic to trust travelers from Italy to self quarantine, but not to trust those from China & Iran. China will call us out for this...

I would have expected more official guidance on social distancing, particually with regards to events. We have a 3 - 26 day incubation period from Sunday midnight to get the country through....

They will be getting slammed. Hopefully they unlock flexibility on all fares, so changes can be made via the app. (of course, they are not obliged to).

How will the border security enforce self-isolation of business visitors coming to New Zealand for less than fourteen days? Will they check return flight tickets and prevent entering the country?
